Re: Power steering failure - Dealership Complaint
UPDATE:
After spending the day at the dealership the verdict is that there is no relationship between the hose replacement and the other problems. The dealership told me that I will need a new gauge cluster now.
WTF is going on????????
I will be getting a second opinion as well as valuing the opinions of our members here.

Re: Power steering failure - Dealership Complaint
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am pleading to the community here for some advise and opinion on the following situation.
Last week I lost power steering. When I got home the power steering reservoir was empty so I started to fill it (with the proper fluid) and noticed that it was leaking out of a hose near the top of the left side (driver side) of the engine.
The next day I got it into the dealership and it was confirmed that the power steering hose needed to be replaced. I chose this particular dealership because of proximity and not wanting to drive too far for fear of damage to the steering pump. The hose was replaced at a cost of $550.
I paid the bill and went out to my car. When I opened the door (no key in ignition) the door chime was going off, a strange occurrance. On first try the car started and then immediately shut off. On second try the car started and stayed running. The car goes into "Safe" mode on first attempt.
I brought all of this to the dealerships attention. They did a diagnostic / evaluation and concluded that there is no relationship between the hose replacement and the problems I now have. I would need a new gauge cluster ($2000) to fix the problem.
Here are my thoughts on this.
My car ran without fault prior and up to dropping it off at the dealership. On the first attempt of starting the car the new problems surfaced. These problems of door chime and "safe" mode starting occured at the dealership. Its not like I drove away and it happened the next day. In other words there is nothing that I did to cause the problems.
My question to the community here is this.
Is there anyway that during the replacement of the power steering hose the tech could have damaged, knocked, disturbed, etc anything that might cause this new problem.
Feel free to voice any other comments that come to mind.
Thanks

Re: Power steering failure
UPDATE:
Brought the car back to Oakville Audi and here are the results:
1. Door chime was disabled by me and now is suddenly working again - service manager will call me when he gets back from vacation.
2. Car starts and then shuts down on first attempt then starts and stays running on second attempt. - use another key and monitor for a period of time. Ignition reader coil may need to be replaced $285 or I need a new Key $210.

Is it possible that during the repairs or resetting to original codes, that your convenience key lost sync? i.e. Would re-syncing your key help? battery in convenience key? Does using the emergency plastic key make a difference on your start-up?

Re: Power steering failure - Dealership Complaint
Mike, your problem sounds electrical in nature, which can be a real pain to track down. Maybe the tech shorted something when he was working on the car, e.g., dropped a ratchet across two electrical contacts, or the battery positive and any other piece of conductive metal.
You should take it to someone who is an expert - which most dealer techs certainly are not, as they just follow Audi's instructions - and get a good diagnosis. What codes is your car throwing? There must be some codes with these problems. The chances of any of us remotely diagnosing an electrical problem without some form of specific data is approaching zero...

Re: Power steering failure - Dealership Complaint
I appreciate all the comments and concerns. I believe it is very possible that the tech did something because the issues happened while the car was in at the dealership in their care.
I will be disconnecting the battery as someone suggested to give the car a re-boot and see if that doesn't work. Also I am bringing the car into Pfaff Tuning on Monday where the ECU flash was done and they are doing an update. Maybe that will solve the problem. Pfaff agrees with me that it all sounds bogus.
I am just not convinced or comfortable paying for a new instrument cluster when all of this happened while the car was in their possession.

Re: Power steering failure - Dealership Complaint
Update:
My car seemed to fix itself. I no longer have the "safe" mode when starting and the door chime is not activated.
Smart car!!!!
Any thoughts?

Re: Power steering failure - Dealership Complaint
It just happened?
If you're talking about "safe mode" for the sound system then apparently all you have to do is go for a 45 min to and hour drive and it will reset itself (information from forum member vgorous). Maybe it does that for everything?
My radio's currently in safe mode because I reset the engine computer by taking out the battery, this also reset the radio, entered the wrong code one too many times so apparently all I have to do is drive for the suggested amount and it'll reset itself.
Good to hear things work again,
