Hey Team,

After picking up my 2010 S4 a few weeks ago, I've washed it... oh, I dunno... 5 times

It's got the Advanced Key... which is awesome, except for the fact that it chirps at me when Im washing the car.

How do you stop it from automatically locking the door and setting the alarm 60 seconds after you get out? I dont want to completely disable that feature, as sometimes i forget to touch the outside of the door handle and walk away... but it takes about 10 mins in the car-wash and it seems to just want to chirp at me the whole time, so every 30-60 seconds, Im having to unlock it.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey man,

This threw me for a loop the first time I washed my car too. The way the advanced key works is that you have to be within 1m of the door you plan on opening. If you are on one side of the car with the key, and your passenger tries to open their door it won't unlock. The car also will not lock from the outside if the key is inside the car.

So you have two options.

1) Leave the car on a shelf when you are washing it (> 1.5m away).

2) Leave the key inside the car and wash away. (This is what I do every time). It won't lock you out.

I don't think it locks itself and sets the alarm if you don't, at least mine doesn't...


It will re-lock and arm itself if you unlock it, but then don't open any of the doors.

As far as washing I just throw the key in the side door pocket when I get out, wash the car, then grab the key and put it back in my pocket.

Before I wash mine, I simply go to the car setup and turn off the confirmation tone in the lock menu? It's in there somewhere. I also turn off the auto-lock option, but it still tries to unlock the car when washing. The signal travels through the water and you'll hear the door unlock when you spray the door handle.

Change setting back when done.

Why don't you just leave the key in the car? Too simple?

Yeah, I just left the key in the car for my last wash. Worked perfectly.

Had the same problem with our 2013 Q5 this week on her first bath. Good to know leaving the key inside while washing will not lock me out. thanks for the tip!
