DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

10 Attachment(s)
I wanted to share my experience. I just change my original radio Concert 3 (concert III) for the Audi Navigation Plus system - OEM RNS-E 2thGen (8P0 035 193 G).

Audi A3 TDI Progressiv 2012 (Canadian edition)
OEM Concert III - 10 Speakers (with sub) sound system - No Bose System
OEM Multifunction Steering Wheel - 3 spokes - Mode and Speek (SDS) - Thumb wheel
OEM BlueTooth
OEM SDS - Voice commands
OEM Aux jack under the armrest
NO Sat radio,
NO Bose System
NO CD changer

https://www.audiforum.ca/attachment....ine=1327176756

1. I bought my RNS-E on eBay. I recommend my eBay seller. Everything is sent from Europe, but the RNS-E was programming for North America. Obviously, with the DVD North America maps , Fakra GPS antenna and remove keys. Very friendly, responds quickly to emails and shipping is very fast (USPS Express Air Service).

Seller:
gps*system

If you bought from European seller (like me), make sure that the RNS-E is programmed for North America (with the DVD maps). Otherwise, there are DIY for regrogramming the Firmware for North America, but I don't try it...

I paid 899.00 USD, shipping included, for the RNS-E 2th Gen (193).

https://www.audiforum.ca/attachment....ine=1327176756

************

2. I bought a 32-pin connector ( 1J0 972 977 G ) for less than 10 CAD to my Audi Dealer. This will allow the AUX plus under the armrests works with the new radio.

https://www.audiforum.ca/attachment....ine=1327176756

************

3. I remove the radio concert III with the 4 remove-keys provided with the purchase (eBay). Pretty simple to remove the radio from it's base. Then disconnect the Quadlock connector and FM antenna.

4. For the AUX connector. I remove the blue connector of the Quadlock connector. In the blue connector, I remove the wire B1, B3 and B7.

https://www.audiforum.ca/attachment....ine=1327176756
*I have not taken this picture. Taking on the Internet. *

Then, I connected the three wires on the 32 pin connector ( 1J0 972 977 G ).

B1 -----------> 22
B3 -----------> 21
B7 -----------> 06

5. Installing the Fakra GPS antenna. My choice, for a maximum reception (Number of satellites), was to install it directly in the center top of the dashboard (near the center speaker).

By cons, many people install it directly to the back of the radio, or behind the instrument cluster on top of the steering column, Any order up from under the dash as long as works if there is no metal above the antenna. But, I don't try it. I would the best reception spot.

https://www.audiforum.ca/attachment....ine=1327176756

The antenna was fixed with double sided tape. No need to remove the dashboard. The wire is inserted between the glass and the dash and slid to the fuse box near the door of condcteur. Then follows the wire under the steering column to the rear of the radio. To do this, I removed the plastic panel under the steering column.

6. Connecting the RNS-E. Very simple. Connect the Quadlock connector, the connector pin 32, the FM antenna and the GPS antenna.

:shock:Don't replace completly the radio in the hole. You have to do some VAG-COM programming. After, it is good to do some checking (PIN Code, AUX Plug, GPS Nav Reception, ...) before.

NEXT STEP, VAG-COM

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

DIVERSITY FM ANTENNA PROBLEM

RNS-E require the Diversity FM antenna amplifier (HF and ZF from up to 4 antennas). Cars without RNS-E or BNS 5 do get the Concert radios that only have two HF antennas. Therefore, you need to buy FM Diversity amplifiers (quite expensive) and installing them in the trunk pannel. JohnS3 on audiforum.us did a DIY on this.

For your information, on the A3 TDI Progressiv 2012 (Canadian version with the original radio Concert 3), there is NO problem with the FM antenna (diversity).

FM sound is perfect. NO fault code, NO graying in the FM sound.

I assume that diversity FM amplifiers are installed at the Audi assembly plant, but I don't check it under the trunk pannel. The key is that everything works perfectly.

If you need the DIY: audiforum.us/threads/converting-symphony-ii-antenna-system-for-use-with-rns-e.5662/page-4

If you have any questions, I can try to answer them. This retrofit is a fairly simple. If you want the nav, it's much better than a portable GPS.

Do you know what would need to change to make sure Satellite radio (option I have as well) works with this unit too?

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

I am not an expert. According to my reading, Quadlock serial connector should be compatible. You have only to move wire when you have :
a) Bose system (which I did not)
b) Auxilary jack (I have)

For cons, you should modify in the VagCom programming.

STG 56 (Navigation System) -> Coding -> Function 07
0xxxx?x: Options I
1 - default
2 - Digital-Radio
3 - Satelite-Radio
4 - Satelite- and Digital-Radio
5 - AUX in (Euro sw 0650+)
6 - AUX in and DAB (Euro sw 0650+)

But how should program the both ? I do not know. For VagCom programming, Audiforum.us should help you. PetrolDave user helped me a lot.

http://audiforum.us/forums/rns-e.40/

I am very happy with my upgrade. It's a nice improvement and investment.

Obviously, the RNS-E radio is not covered by Audi warranty vehicle, as it was not factory installed. Normally, the eBay seller offer a guarantee of 12 or 24 months. For me, it is 12 months.

On the other hand, I do not think it's a device that easily broken. It's still an Audi radio. There a degree of risk, but I'm not really disturbed by the warranty. You can keep your old radio Concert3 for the warranty, but for me... I will try to sell it on eBay. It seems to have a value of $ 200.

Did you buy an OEM RNS-E or a knock-off? Price would be pretty good for the original unit.
If you could, please PM me the e-bay seller you used.

Certainly, it's an OEM Audi RNS-E 8P0 035 193 (2nd gen) with the DVD of North America maps 2010-11. As I said, it comes from Europe, but it has been programmed (firmware) for North America.

Certainly, you can do. This is the same OEM navigation system, no matter the configuration of the vehicle. There are only a few adjustments to make.

A) For the Bose system, there are one wire to move into the QuadLock Connector. On the Blue Connector, you Need to move pin B5 to pin B7. it's pretty simple to do it, I did it for the AUX plug.

B5 ------> B7

B) After, for the Bose system AND for the SAT radio, you have to modify the VagCom proramming. As you can see in my Vag-Com programming (post no. 2), there are modules that need programming with the Bose system and Satellite radio.

As I explained, I am not an expert in Vag-Com programming. Some users on the US forum (http://www.audiforum.us) are very familiar with Vag-Com. PetrolDave helped me a lot.

http://audiforum.us/forums/rns-e.40/

The Ross-Tech wiki give also all programming code inside the car: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index..._Cabriolet_(8P)

I recommend to program your Audi by a small independent garage specializing in Audi. They have the Ross-Tech software (very expensive) and the wire needed to plug it at your car. To save time in the garage ($$$$), the best is to have your programming code with you and give it to the garage. It is then very fast. The cheap kit on eBay (China) are not recommended. They do not allow access to certain program modules.

Enjoy,

alright guys, I FInally picked up my 2011 -line titanium edition A3 and coulnd't be happier!

Well except as mentioned before doesn't have nav/ipod interface I want so badly.

But it totally freaks me out to think of doing the intall correctly myself (i.e. having use of steering wheel controls etc). I live in Toronto and looking for a reputable installer. Any suggestions Please and thanks!?

Also need to find the nav system to install first. Is ebay the best bet?

Thanks again!

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

To Amimal:

First, Congratulations for your purchase.

Installation is really easy. Follows the step of my D.I.Y. Otherwise, go to a small independent garage specializing in VW / Audi. Look: https://www.audiforum.ca/showthread....653#post175653 They can make you install the radio programming AND Vagcom (not to be ignored). Within two hours of time (max).

I think that eBay is the best place for price and low risk (purchase price covered by the warranty from PayPal). Otherwise, I found this store: http://vagnavs.com/Audi1.html at 1399.00 USD, but I do not know if it's one of the first (192) or second generation (193) RNS-E. According to the photo, this is the first (192) generation, because knobs are not chrome. Among other things, first gen (192), they have No HD screen, No SDHC Card (only SD card max - 8 Go), No 3D map view, Not the same processor (slower)...

There is also this store: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/8P0_035_193/ at 2000.00 USD without the DVD maps and the GPS antenna Fakra.

To you to see. Personally, I do not regret having taken an eBay seller... My RNS-E look like a new one (no scratches or signs of wear) and works great.

Good luck,

4Circle

***Also, if anyone do the retrofit, please send your photos and a description of your experience. This may be interested to read you. 4Circle***

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

Good news! On another thread, Spleen's user found Fakra connector of the OEM Sharkfin antenna on the roof of our A3 8P.

This antenna has a GPS receiver and a Sirius receiver (Sat Radio). The problem is that no one had previously found the hiding place of the wire to connect directly the RNS-E and don't connect an additional GPS antenna as I have done.

Here are the explanations! As for me, I'll wait until spring before removing the Subwoofer panel to connect my RNS-E. I'll keep you posted.

Link: https://www.audiforum.ca/showthread....086#post176086

-Quote-
"Good news! Went into the driver's side trunk panel today (well, my mechanic did with me hovering over his shoulder!) and found the GPS antenna cable!

It came down the rear most roof pillar, and was tucked behind the subwoofer. We were able to fish it out from there without needing to remove the subwoofer at all!

To check yours, first pull out the rear lighting unit from the headliner. This will let you see the bottom of the sharkfin. Mine clearly had 4 wires coming out. 2 were the SAT radio antennas, 1 was the telephone antenna, and the final one was the GPS. So if you know how many SAT antenna connectors you have, and you do find 2 more wires coming out of the sharkfin, there is a good chance that you already have the GPS antenna in there like I did!

We tucked the GPS and "tel" antenna leads into the same compartment where the SAT radio receiver usually goes in the side of the trunk to hook up once I get all the gear together."

Before purchasing your 2012 A3, here is information that was unknown to me during my purchase last October. This is another forum user who informed me by PM (information to check against with your dealer, I don't check by myself).

 There would be an package on special order (only) that is not in the brochure or on the website of Audi Canada. For 2200.00 CAD, you may have the RNS-E 2012, the MMI (iPhone connectivity) and parking sensor... Which is not very expensive for the package. I immagine that it takes several months before receiving the vehicle from the Audi plant.

Otherwise, there are lots of repair shop that specialize in Audi will be happy help you for up to two hours of working time. https://www.audiforum.ca/eastern-canada-discussion-48/audi-repair-shops-referrals-18979/

Hey FourCircle, Thank you for your information, but Audi is having a promotion of 5 years finance rate @ 1.9% and first month wavied, expiring at the end of this month and any car which delivered past this month will lose the promotion. I am not sure if the promotion would get extended though.

I will re ask the dealer though.

and.. thank you for the link, that really helps!

Have fun. It's a great car, fuel frendly and RNS-E add value, fun and convenient. If you buy an used RNS-E (like me by eBay), make sure that's a 2sd Gen (193), that have the US/Can Firmware and DVD Map. Find a good eBay seller and pay by PayPal (fraud insurance).

1.9% is very good. In october, it was 2.9% on 48 or 60 months.

Good Luck,

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

Fourcircle, so I am waiting on delivery for a3, and am going to order Nav from ebay in the mean time.

Would replacing a Nav and program void warranty on car?

Heard accessing to chip or computer would void the warranty and i am wondering if this "programing" would void the warranties.

Thank you!

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

oh and, one more question.
have you tried putting a reverse camera?

FourCircle 04-16-2012 10:41 AM

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

Warranty: Obviously, the RNS-E radio is not covered by Audi warranty vehicle, as it was not factory installed. Normally, the eBay seller offer a guarantee of 12 or 24 months. For me, it was 12 months. For the rest, everything is on the warranty.

For VagCom programmation, not really, because the program only affects the radio (and communications with the multifunction steering wheel and trip computer). It's not as if you had chip your engine. Reprogramming of the ECU has direct repercussions on the engine and transmission.

Backup Camera : No. I don't try it. And I don't want to pay for this option (not necessary).

Thanks again FourCircle.

I finally got my TDI yesterday and I am loving it.
It's actually for my wife's car, but I get to drive for the first year. lol

I am going to order RNS-E from ebay where you suggested. It's really a good deal.

I have one more questions..
I am thinking of getting an aftermarket reverse camera with RNS-E. Do you know if RNS-E have an auxillary input or mulitimedia interface for video?

i guess not, since i read it somewhere that i will need to buy IMA from kufatec...

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

I think that it's on the 32pin connector (I bought it for the AUX plug). You will need to connect the wire on the pin... I don't know where. Check on google to find a DIY about it.

GPS*SYSTEM is a good and honnest ebay seller. And, he have the new DVD USA/CAN Map (2011-12). Ask to have it.

If you have other question, pm me.

Hi Coolmo

Have you gone ahead with the installation or ordering the unit from E-bay. I am going to order it as well, I was just wonderig if you want to bring both cars to a shop and maybe get a deal. What do you think?

I have installed it myself.
The unit came in pretty fast, with good packaging. in a perfect condition and I am loving it so far.

It's not that hard to install, however, you will need some time if you are first timer.

The only couple issues I am having, the place of GPS antenna being inside of dash, getting weak signal (but working perfectly fine on the ground level, just not working well underground)

and, I need Vag-Com change in order to get my aux in working properly.

If you find a shop who can connect the GPS antenna to sharks fin, and vag-com fixes, I will go with you for sure.
Let me know.

Hi Ryan

Did you get your unit from gps*systems? Is it a new used or second hand? Ok the website says USED, but what is the condition that you got yours?
All that Vag-Com sounds like Chinese to me (i am not really car savvy) so I will look for a shop here in Toronto that can solve those issues. (the ones you mentioned). Whats is a reasonable price to pay ?
I also emailed Four Circle - he seems to know what he is doing- for help with the installation , I am not sure where in Canada he lives - but I havent heard from him yet.

any issues with the blueu tooth, does it work the same way as with the Audi Concert system

thanks for the info

Edward

Vag-Com is not chinese, it's the cable kit that you can change the code for the radio unit, clusters, etc. You will find tons of info throughout the forums. The proper wording is VCDS and ross-tech is the most popular ones but pricey.

I ordered from same seller from GPS*system and it listed as used, but it looks like new.

everything works perfectly. I get all map direction from clusters, etc.

let me know if you find a price.

Re: DIY: Concert 3 to RNS-E Retrofit - 2012 Audi A3

Thx Coolmo for the answer... My answer will be the same.

For Vag-Com, go to an Audi or VW Specialist Repair Shop. They will have the Ross-Tech wire and software to do it. They have Audi Forom user's refferrals here: https://www.audiforum.ca/showthread.php?t=18979

With GPS*System seller, the radio will be programmed for your A3, but not the computer inside the car.

Anyone who has installed new RNS-E to their audi, I have a question for you.

How do I make my music either mute or turn down the volume automatically while naviation talks for direction?

is it even possible?

Thanks!

Hi,

I just bought the same radio, but 192 model.

It is written that this is plug and play... do I need to buy the 32-pin connector?

If yes, what is the utility of this?

B1 -----------> 22
B3 -----------> 21
B7 -----------> 06

Has anyone managed to get SDS to work on the RNS-E? If so, can you point to a guide?
