My brother owns an A3 that is giving him strange brake noises, and not only when they haven't warmed up yet. It's pretty new, not too many miles on it, and he has taken it to the dealer several times in hopes of getting it fixed, but to no avail. Has anybody else had a similar problem? How did you solve it?

 

Do you know what kind of pads and rotors are on it/are they stock?
What did the dealer do?

 

what kind of noises are they? Is it like metal on metal noise?

 

Does this happen all the time or just when they're cold?

 

It happens to me, too (A3, 2006, DSG 2.0, 10300km) al the time, warm or cold. Some kind of weird noise, I went to dealer and they said everything is allright with the brakes, nothing wrong. Also, I have the brake squeal as well. It's so annoying.

 

I am not sure exactly what the dealer did, I know that the visits were quick, so I doubt that they did more than just take a look at it. It's more of a squal than anything, and it does happen, like juzzo described, warm or cold.

 

I have same problem for the past 6000km. the dealer first ran TSB (whatever that is) and the problem did not go away. Last time they charged me money to tell me that it is normal and I have to live with it. Well, I CAN'T!

 

See if you can replicate the noises on deamand and bring it in to the dealer and show them.

Hey it would help if you posted what you drive! But I am guessing it is an A3 Because this is very common in the A3's, what happens is the breaks get a "glaze" to them on the rotors and the brake pads, as this occurs it tends to squeal a lot, also sometimes because of dust and recoks get in there that this might occur so I would highly suggest taking your car down to a car wash and with a high pressure washer blast the brake's front and rear, to eliminate one problem, but make sure you go very easy on the brakes to the car wash. If they get too hot and you wash them with cold water it can cause cracking etc. so be on the safe side and let them cool of a bit before you do wash them. i would say try to get it from every angle spending about a minute at each wheel. Now for the second part the "glazing" issue I guess the simple way of describing it is taking two pieces of glass and rubbing it against one another, not much grip right? well the rotors should be that way but the brake pads should be sand paper like right? Glazing occurs when the brakes get too hot and sand down the brake pads to a complete smooth finish, as well as the rotors! I guess you can think of it as a "coating on the brakes" to fix this problem is to take your car to an empty parking lot or a remote area with no traffic, and drive your car like it was stolen. Speed up to 80-60km/h and then slow down to 10km/h make sure you do not stop completely in this procedure because t will start to glaze the brakes again. do this about 4 times over all in one shot and then park the car as quick as you can and let the brakes cool off completely, without using the E-brake just if its an auto put it in park if its a manual put it into neutral and sit in the car for about 10 minutes on a cold day! This will fix your problem! Enjoy! Let me know how it works for ya!

 

it happens on my car too....i had bring back to dealer 4 times already!! What they said is A3's brake pad is a performance brake pad....Also because of the cold weather in winter, they said it's normal if there's a noise coming out......
