Unfortunately even at the dealership level some sales people still think that all quattros are the same. If they had done the A3 training modules as I have, they would know that the A3's have the Haldex system which is not the same as the other torsen differential systems on the A4, A6, A8 etc. It is just easier to tell customers that its the same system. Audi, for obvious reasons, would also love you to believe the A3 has the 50/50 or 40/60 torque split, and hence do not specify exactly what the torque split is on their website or brochure. Yet they mention the exact torque splits for the other vehicles in the range.....

I would suggest digging a little deeper to see for yourself.

As I understand it the Haldex system only activates the rear wheels when the front doesn't provide enough grip. If the new A3 has a 40/60 split I would just assume that it now uses the same real Quattro system as the A4.

Just been looking at various sources, and it does look like the A3 is a Haldex system. Any AWD VAG product with a transverse engine (A3, TT, Golf) is Haldex. Those with longitudinal engines (A4, A6, etc, Passat) are torsen Quattro.

quattro Drivetrain

For the Audi A4, S4, RS 4, A6, S6, A8, S8 and Audi Q7 models, quattro is a Torsen (TORque SENsing)-based all-wheel drive system with torque-sensing center differential and EDL side-to-side power distribution. The system actively redirects power to the opposite side wheels, front to back or back to front. Audi quattro can allocate the majority of the engine's power to the axle with the better tire grip.

The A8 and S8 models also feature quattro IV, which is a subtle refinement that helps further increase the vehicle's tractive power.

The S4 and RS 4 manual models and the S6 model feature a 40/60 torque split for a rear-biased system that is more performance-oriented. This system is only available on S4 models with manual transmissions.

The Audi Q7 models feature a rear-biased system with a torque split that sends 58 percent to the rear and 42 percent to the front.

For the A3 with the S-line package and the TT 3.2 Coupe and Roadster models, quattro is a Haldex-based all-wheel drive system with an electro-hydraulic center clutch and EDL side-to-side power distribution. The system dynamically redirects power to the opposite side wheel, front to back or back to front.
