06 A3 Questions
Recently bought my A3 with 59000 miles. I have an opportunity to buy an extended warrantee and an torn. I haven't heard of major problems from 60000-100000 miles. Any opinions? I should also add that I've had 5 check engine lights in the 4 months I've had it. 3 have been for the butterfly valve on the intake manifold?? or something like that.
The car is noisey on the freeway. It has Pirelli tires. Would this be the cause? Any quiet tire suggestions? What are your favorite tires?
TIA

Have a '06 A3 just coming out of warranty. The extended warranty is not a good idea. It is a third party product not an Audi warranty and a personal friend - Audi GM - does not recommend it either. Usually a hassle trying to claim any repairs and it does not include scheduled maintenance such as the free oil changes anway.
Get rid of those Pirelli tires, they are the worst tires on the market. Only got 30k on mine and they were not only noisy and harsh riding they were terrible in the winter and in the rain. Bought a set of nice Michelins and they are great tires. Noticed the difference immediately.
Afraid I can't help you with the check enigine light issue.

Thank you. I've also heard of one or two recalls on the car. Anybody familiar with those?
Which Michelins did you buy? I've heard good things about the Harmonies.

Bought Michelin Pilots Exalto AS. They are an all season. Since I'm in Edmonton I don't really need winters.
The recall - at least the one I got - is for the ignition coil. No urgency unless it starts giving an error code. I have it checked in the spring.

I just picked up an 06' A3 from Phoenix with 50K on it and I drove it back. I got a Emission light on it that says it is running lean on idle (I picked up a VAG-Com so I could do my own work as well as the eBahn Manual for the car) I think it might be that butterfly valve thing you are talking about but not sure. The code coming up is a P0171.
I have a 2006 audi a3 at 99 000km and for the past year after my warranty went out i have not got any cel or anything except for wear and tear items. The warranty is not worth it if they are asking around $2000 but if its around 800 i would go for it. Reason is because all you have to pay is a $50 for parts deductible and they will cover the rest on anything, for example if your camshaft goes or something then your covered. As for the recalls if you call the main office for audi, i think its a 1800 number not sure but you can look that up and tell them your vin they can check if your car has any recalls. The one recall i know that you have is your coilpacks, certain part numbers on the coilpacks started a recall campaign and if you have replaced them already you can get a reimbursement for your money but you have to call audi america/canada and talk to them. you can schedule your car right now with a audi dealer for the coilpack campaign if you haven't changed them cause your car is listed under the years for recall notices. I have already booked an appointment although i have not received a letter because i called audi canada and they said it doesn matter if i have the letter or not it just matters that the specific year and model of car is in the campaign.

On your tire question...I bought my 06 with 40000km. It had the original Pirelli P6 tires. They were very noisy and noticeably scalloped. I, also, switched to Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S. At 10000km on them they are wearing evenly and remain quiet so far. I've had these tires on my '92 GTi, too, and think they are a great all round tire.
