2001 a4 alarm comes on when trying to start

My son has a 2001 A4, sometimes when you get into the car ( key FOB not working so always use the key manually) the alarm goes off. One time I held the key in the door to the left for 5-10 seconds, the windows went down and then the car would start. Not working this time.. Any suggestions?
