Diesel vs Gas - COSTS
Been talking with my Audi rep and they like the TDI but insist I don't look at is as a "cost efficient" solution. My understanding is that...
- Diesel MAY be cheaper
- Ongoing maintenance is higher
- Resale value is higher
Any other major pros/cons related to costs? I know nothing at all about diesel so I just want to understand the ongoing stuff really, I guess...
Are oil changes the same frequency/costs? I understand you have to pour some other chemical stuff in your tank regularly - how often is it and how much does the stuff you have to pour in costs?
Any other costs/maintenance differences vs your typical gasoline car?
Also, I currently have a car using regular unleaded... so I'd be moving to a SUV using either premium or diesel...

Diesels often hold more oil than comparable gas engines, fuel filters have to be replaced annually and can be a little spendy. DEF will also be an expense but not a big one. Service intervals were the same for my Jetta TDI as they were for gas models, every 12 months or 16,000 km. On the other hand there is no ignition system so you will never have to replace spark plugs.
A: Diesel is nearly 25 cents a liter less than premium where I live.
B: The US Dept of Energy rates the TDI at 27 MPG combined vs 21 MPG for the 3.0t and 23 MPG for the 2.0t, although the TDI and 3.0t use stop start to get those numbers but the 2.0t doesn't.
C: Historically, diesels are an easy resell and hold their value very well.
The TDI will definitely be much cheaper to run on a daily basis, particularly if you rack up a lot of miles.
Possible future post warranty repairs to the diesel emissions system are an unknown but these systems have been in use for 6 years in many diesel trucks and their reliability has improved dramatically.
Performance. The TDI is only .3 seconds slower to 60 than the 3.0t, although the 3.0t's higher horsepower should give it a bigger advantage in top end performance. The great thing about diesels is their gobs of torque which make them a lot of fun in daily driving. 428 Lb Ft for the TDI, vs 347 for the SQ5 and 295 for the 3.0t.
If I were to switch from my 2.0t, the TDI would be a no brainer for me.

I think think diesel makes sense for people putting a lot of km's on, if you are hitting the highway and racking up well over 40k a year it probably is a good choice. For folks running around town and commuting from the suburbs it really does not save much, plus gas tends to be more readily available so there is a convenience factor there too.

I've never heard of carbon buildup on intake valves being a problem on diesels even though they are also direct injection. Perhaps one more reason to go with the TDI.
