I always change my oil at around 8.000 km, just make sure you check the oil level about every 3 weeks, use synthetic oil (castrol/mobil1) and get the proper audi oil filter from your dealer if you change it yourself.

some ideas:
- oil needs a change when thicker or looking bad (dark color, shine of metal particulates)
- if you think it helps average/consumption/mileage (its the plugs and airfilter and manifold cleaned with seafoam)
- read your car's manual, each model has inputs from the engineers in Germany around what makes sense best for the particular VIN
I prefer synthetic, motorol 1/castrol syntec at 0w50/5w50 which stays clear for around 12k kms, then its more like i think it was cleaner last time ....

There are several things wrong with this.

First, oil loses viscosity over time. Which means it gets thinner, not thicker; even though this is a bad way to look at viscosity. This is because the additives in the oil break down. If your oil is getting thicker, you have a sludge issue and should take care of that immediately.

Second, if you see metal in your oil, the oil change is the last thing you need to worry about. You have much more serious problems.

Third, regular oil changes with the correct oil does improve fuel mileage. Any reduced friction will always improve mileage. Will you notice the difference, probably not.

With conventional oil, you should be changing your oil every 5,000km/3 months. This is a maximum figure and should be treated as such. I never understand people who invest $30,000 in a vehicle and are too cheap/lazy to spend $80 on an oil change.

With FULL synthetic oil, Audi recommends 15,000km as a maximum. Again that is a maximum and you still should change the oil filter before that period. I personally change mine at 8,000km. Use a 502.00 (specifically designed for European vehicles) certified oil and you should be fine.

I have tried regular seafoam, as well as seafoam transtune in engine oil.

1. Added a can of trans-tune to engine-oil, drove 10 miles, seafoamed the engine through vaccum lines, lots of white smoke got a mileage improvement. Put in extended performance 5W30, old engine oil did not look very bad

2.11,000 KMs later added regular seafoam to engine oil, drove around 50 miles with engine upto 7K in burst, seafoamed engine, a lot lesser smoke, smelt like burning coal, still smoother running. Engine oil was black, and that was Motorol 1 Extended performance that needs a change at 24,000 KMs as the label says

My mileage improved from 22 to 26mpg local, 28mpg hwy over this time

I changed my driving style, so that could have a contribution too, but I love the way it throws everyone back in the seats when the pedal is floored

The results were similar on my Passat, the engine oil was not as black and the fuel economy improvement was a lot better

Conclusion:
For a first time, seafoam through engine oil/vaccum lines/gas tank has a considerable improvement by clearing a lot of carbon from the engine. Fuel economy improves, engine runs smoother.

Don't know about the risk, but the passat dealer was offering a similar engine cleaning service which he did not wish to elaborate, but when I mentioned Seafoam, he said it was something similar, but VW/Audi approved

My mechanic says that nothing should be added to engine oil in Turbos, but that was after he saw the black oil

Too many variables to give definitive answer, let's put it this way if you work out every second day do you change your clothes the second week in. To put it to you simply if you drive the car the way the manufacturer says you should then every 8000k's is good if you drive the car just summer this all changes if you drive the car as if the street's to you are Mosport every thing changes. I change oil regardless every 5000k's two weeks before i put the car away and first week i resurrect the beast. Enough said.

I change the oil myself every 5K to 6.5K KM's on both the S4 and A6 using Mobil1 synthetic exclusively.

I purchase bulk OEM oil filters for half what the dealer charges.
