Love the allroads, but to be honest you'll find the only thing more rare than a 4.2 S4 Avant is a 4.2 AllRoad.

The 2.7T AllRoad is the one you'll find mostly. I love the concept of taking one of those, and doing a K04 or GT build. Create the most badass wagon around!

CAVEAT - the AllRoad was the least reliable car Audi ever sold in North America. I don't know why , other than to speculate the K03 turbos in the 2.7T were famous for failing early...as was the air suspension prone to expensive trouble. The 4.2 in the AllRoad is the same engine as the B6/7 S4 incidentally...chain driven 4.2 40 valve.

Bottom line is that the S4 is the fastest, funnest, best handling, best looking of the bunch...but it's also the smallest and least practical from a space point of view. It will also be uber rare, and quite expensive in Avant form.

I'm not even sure if I would want an S6 Avant...they look funny to me. They look like they're about 20 feet long and just don't feel sporty. I'd stick with AllRoad or S4.

I have to agree with rarity, I have only found one for sale in Canada right now.

It is the same engine, but de-tuned to 300 HP correct? is this all in the ECU or are there other differences? If it's just ECU that can easily be fixed by Unitronic.

Hey Mike, where's your learned buddy?

Sooo, got to plunk my a$$ in the back, front and trunk, of an A4 and an A6 last night (and an '04 RS6 that was on the lot, $33,900 if anybody's interested). I found the 4 to be somewhat cozy, especially in the back. Leg room was shy, my knees touched the drivers seat, and two adults only had about 6 inches between their shoulders. Headroom was ok on the front but again my head touches the roof in the back (I'm 6'2") The 6 was quite a bit more roomy, back seat, no knees touching (close, but still had room) and about 12" between shoulders. Head room was still tight, but I'm sure the avant would be better in both cases.

The one thing I did notice was the definate "up-scaled-ness" of the A6. Well apointed car, nice accents, better leather, nicer console.

Now to find an allroad... need to see one up close.

Did you go beyond parking your A** or did you actually drive any of them? If so what was the RS6 like? There is somewhat of a performance difference as well as an interior difference between an A4 and S4 as well. When I say difference I am referring to type of materials not roominess.

Interested to finally see what you end up with.

I didn't drive anything, it was rush hour, so too much traffic to have any real fun or really get a feel for the cars.

The RS6 is at Richmond Hill Fine Cars.

I'm in a similar debate right now, so I'll throw in my 2 cents. I will say that I'm looking for a slightly newer vintage, so that's influencing my decision in a way that probably doesn't factor into yours.

The S4 avant is the sportiest of the bunch. It feels nimble and tight. Space is a little tight. I have a 4.5 year old and a 1 year old in car seats, and I can tell it's going to be tight for their needs. I'm not so worried about putting adults back there because I'm too lazy to take out the car seats . Plus, my wife's Q5 has enough room when we need to go out with other adults.

I wouldn't consider the S6, because I don't enjoy the proportions - I know it's a great car, but it's not my thing.

I love the look of the Allroad. With the mod that allows you to drop the suspension, and some aggressive wheels, I think it's a fantastic looking car. It's much, much bigger than the S4 Avant. I threw a car seat in the back just to see, and my kids had at least 4 inches more space between their knees and the back of the seat. Even though the 4.2 is impossible to get, the 2.7T is very mod friendly, so I could make it a rocket (think K04) without making it wholly unreliable. The air suspension is definitely an issue, but there are options for managing this. My real issue is age - I really want a car that has 40,000 - 60,000 km, as opposed to 100,000+. That's damn near impossible to find on a car that they stopped making 5 years ago.

So I'm keeping my eyes open for a S4 Avant at this point - it's pretty rare in it's own right, so it's a very slow search. I will say that I've now started considering the thought of getting a B8 2.0T Avant, and a few years down the road doing a K04 upgrade. It gets me more room, more technology, even though I'll have to give up the noise and performance (in the short term) of the V8.

Sorry for the long rant...

Despite what I said in my last post, if I thought I could afford the maintenance on an RS6, I would buy one without batting an eyelid.

I saw one listed at a Mercedes dealership that only had 60,000 km (or something like that) - a week later, I actually had time to go check it out but it was gone.
