I noticed you are looking for a used A5. I am currently looking for one as well.

I use the below for my research: if it is within 3 years, use carcostcanada to get the wholesale price for the "new" old model. The used car price should be 15-20% below this number at minimum.

The rest of the factors are:

vehicle inspection
mileage
smoking/non-smokning
whether seller has Audi Care (this means the car is well taken care of during its use)

I'd pay for a qualified 3rd party to do a thorough inspection including a carproof report.

Depending on the faults, I'd price in another 15-20% and compare that to seller's bottom line and whether I accept that or not. If the seller cannot meet this I just walk away.

Should I use Carcostcanada as a gauge of price? Any thoughts?
I looked at the dealer invoice price for both USA and CANADA. It's roughly 35,000 USD vs 42,000 CAD (I am rounding off to the thousands) The MSRP is 38,000USD vs 47,000 CAD. With the 6.1% import tax and the current exchange rate disadvantage for Canadians, there's still significant savings to be had. I'd say savings of 4-5K, everything else being equal. Audi's basic warranty can be carried to Canada from USA. You'll lose the maintenance package that might come with the car. I am still debating whether or not to go down South.

Carcostcanada is well worth $40. I was able to negotiate a 5% discount of MSRP for A3, where total difference was 8.3% to the wholesale price. Guy even threw winter mats in...
Not every dealership would go this low, so you have to try a few.

I am also looking at purchasing an A5, but I am looking at a used one, 2010. I have also priced it out and this is what i have concluded:

US -> 2010 ice silver 44706km 33,969 (listed US price)
CDA -> 2010 white 49423 km 40,999 (listed CDN price)

I figure, I would be able to negotiate the Cdn car to $38K, and at the end of the day, it would cost me $43015
If i can negotiate the US car down to $31K, at the end of the day, after converting the rate, paying all the taxes and the duties, riv fee, DRL, license fee it will cost me $38250. That is a difference of $4800.

I am just amazed at how much cheaper it is in the US. But I do have some concerns, mostly around buying a lemon and Canada honoring the warranty. Any advice?

Basically if you purchase your vehicle outside of Canada you are on your own. I bought my S8 from a broker in Florida. After paying extra (excessive) import taxes and various fees, plus shipping from Miami to Vancouver I still managed to save $15,000+ on a vehicle that is already very rare to begin with. This car had less than 40,000km and the original Audi warranty will not be honoured in Canada, as stated by the broker as well as a local (Miami) Audi dealer. I would make sure it passes a very thorough pre-purchase inspection from an actual Audi dealership as well as CAA and you should be good to go if you plan on purchasing from the United States.

I just picked up my 2012 A5 premium Sline 2.0T. Beautiful piece of work. I think i managed to get a pretty good deal. MSRP sale price came to 52500, got it for 46700. Which is like 11% of the msrp and 1.5% above carcost canada invoice price.

The dealer advertised 3500 off for cash purchase. I went in for a test drive, said i could do cash and left. They called back a day latter saying they were willing to go lower. Negociate another 3k off and it was a deal.

This will work if there are still several on the lot and they are trying to clear for the new 2013 (no better me thinks) and you go cash all in...
