How do I negotiate a used vs new A5 purchase in Canada?

I looked into a US purchase and the difference in price is not high enough to make it worth the trip down south.

I'm wondering what price I should negotiate for in Canada, since the A5 is in demand?

Should I use Carcostcanada as a gauge of price? Any thoughts?

A carcostcanada membership is about $40 for 10 reports. If it gives you peace of mind, then I think it's a fairly immaterial investment for a ton of information.

I actually already got a Carcost Canada membership. The only problem is it doesn't give used car values. Also, a lot of Audi dealers, because of the A5's popularity, demand a certain percentage above invoice before agreeing to sell the car, from what I heard from a friend

Like everything else in life, anything with a price is negotiable. It's difficult to gauge how much you can negotiate off a price without details on the vehicle. Just be sure to get a pre-purchased inspection for a pre-owned vehicle. Also, if trading keep in mind that a dealer almost never gives you a fair trade on your vehicle.

I plan on selling my own car privately since I expect the dealer will cut me a couple grand less than its actual worth.

I was wondering how fast Audi A5's fly out the door once they become available, since it's not on the car lot for long. Also, I wonder if I can get some free winter tires and rims thrown in, and extended warranty, as I'm wondering if the commission that the salesmen get isn't affected by those freebies.

Seems like you've done some research prior to partaking this adventure. :)

Dealers will always take your trade in for less because they say they have to "recondition" the vehicle in order to make it sales worthy. Excuses aside, you will almost never get fair trade value on your trade in. That's just how business is at a dealership. Any dealership.

The A5s aren't exactly rare here in Vancouver, and I've actually seen quite a few awesome S5s as well. How well they are selling depends on the market demand in your area.

The longer the vehicle is on a lot the greater advantage you have. These vehicles are purchased on credit and at after a certain time the dealership starts paying interest on the credit used to purchase these vehicles.

In regards to freebies, absolutely nothing is ever free. And don't expect free winter tires, extended warranty or anything else like that. The chances of that happening is the same as the sales representative offering you his wife for the weekend. It'll never happen. And freebies always come at a price, even if it isn't in front of your eyes. :)

Negotiating an A5 wouldn't be any different from negotiating a E55. Or anything else automotive for that matter. Some people will tell you that negotiating is an artform and all this other bulls**t but in the end, you just have to set a goal (price) and stay within your means. If the other party isn't interested then move on. The Audi market in Toronto is far better than the Audi market here. Here most people would jump on the opportunity to own a 6-Series long before they would own an A5. The automotive market out east is always hotter than the market out here, where everything is vastly overpriced. Remember that you can't walk away with something for free and that you're not going to pay the sales representative sticker price. Just find a common fair value for both parties, just as long as it is within your favour. If not, move on. There are countless Audi dealerships in the GTA and even a little further out. In today's market everyone is looking to recover from the last couple years of poor investments so when they see a chance to make easy money they will jump on it. Just be firm with your demands and be realistic with your demands and you'll walk away with an awesome new ride. :)

Ordered a 2012 A5 Premium Plus from Oakville Audi in June...3.5% off the MSRP. Good deal on maintenance package as well.

It's roughly 9.1% price difference between the wholesale and the MSRP for the 2012 A5 last I checked on carcostcanada. Same goes for the options.

I would aim for MSRP - 5%. The dealer should be fine making 4% on the sale.
