Default Rotors/Pads questions

Hi All,

I'm a new onwer of a 2006 Audi A4 Quatro, so far I like it.
I'm also still have my 1987 VW Scirocco and I still like the german engineering...
I'm registered for years with scirocco.org, and looking for the same helpful forum on Audi... So I guess I found it

I have some repairs to do on the Audi, mainly the rotors/pads, looking where to have it fix at a good price in Montreal... I have experience with the VW, so this might help, but I'm sure I can learn new stuff for Audi here...

I don't have a garage/tools to fix it myself, but I'm sure changing brake should not be a big issue... So where is the best place to buy parts at a good price for my new Audy near Montreal?

Quick question, is it normal to change rotors/pads on a A4 after 65000km? My friend, who sold me the A4, tell me that rotors should still be good, but to my point of view they are due to change... So how do I verify if they still good or not?

BTW I checked on tirerack.com and selected the "Brake Components for 2006 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro S-Line Package With TPMS"... How can I know if I have a S-Line, Premium or Base model? And what does TPMS means?

Another Question, Oil/filter change, I should use which oil? Synth I guess! What is the good frequency of changing oil? every 3 months / 5000 km? Or should I just follow the computer in the Audi which tell's me right now to change it in near 10000km or 209days!?!? I found it a bit long, but once again I got two friends different point a view ... One tells me to change it every 3 months/5000km and the other just follow what the computer says...

I might have many more questions, but for now lets just go by priorities
The next ones will be on the head gasket, timing belt, tires, etc So a lot a fun learning to come for me...

Thank for all the replies, and I'm happy to find a good place just like the scirocco forums for my audi.

Joel

Wow.... a lot of questions...

Let's take them one by one.

I personally do my own rotors and pads but i have a garage at home to work on my car. Any good mechanic can do brakes on an Audi, it's as simple as any other car.

I go to the Ultramar on the corner of St-Laurent and Bernard when i don't feel like working on a car. Talk to George. Been going there for years with my Audi's and they do a good job for a good price (parts and labor). He did my timming-belt on my TT (1.8T) for about $800 which is a good price and he does all my little fixes before track events.

Be careful, if it gets to a more involved Audi problems (especially electrical), i would go to the dealer or a more specialized garage. If you deal with a garage, no need to buy your own parts !!! It would be like showing up at the restaurant with your lunch Do challenge them on the parts price however if you feel they are exaggerating a bit.

I do track events with my TT (and sometimes with the S4) so i do buy performance parts. Mostly tires, rotors and brake pads obviously. For that i go to : Perry Pi่ces d'Autos Laval.

Google it, you'll find it right away.

"change rotors/pads on a A4 after 65000km" : Depends a lot on your driving !!! Pads : you'll know when you need them. In fact you will ear them. Rotors : if you don't wait for your pads to grind on them before you change your pads, rotors will last a lot longer. You'll know you need to change the rotors when you feel them vibrate on light braking at high speed (100-120 km/h). When they vibrate, they are not true anymore, change them.

"How can I know if I have a S-Line, Premium or Base model" :
- S-Line : You have the logo in the front and on the sides.... easy enough.
- Premium and base : Don't know the difference at a glance (maybe someone else can tell)

"TPMS" : Tire Pressure Monitoring System. A stupid gizmo in your tires that will sound an alarm in your dash to tell you the tires are under-inflated. Complicates tire changes and rim changes. Can you tell i don't like it ?

Regular oil : 3 months/5000km
Synthetic : 10000km or 209days

I recommend Synthetic. Half the oil changes for double the price

Have fun with your new car... ill see you around i guess since your in Montreal. We should get a sticker to recognized this forums contributors on the road.

I personally, for brake pads use Red Stuff. Its a kevlar and ceramic mix. They are awesome. I got them online for like 120 a peace, just look around there first for canadian based websites, there are a lot of them that give good deals. And in regards to oil, I change my regular every 4000 and synthetic every 8000 to be on the safe side. I drive a lot so its usually way before 3 months, more like two.

And question for mmazerolle, you change your oil on your TT every 10000 even when you use it a s a track car?

Obviously not. I change the oil before every track session. But i use mostly the TT on the track. So the S4 gets the regular treatment : once every 6 months with synthec.
