For Calgary weather I strongly recommend winter tires. Better yet, a set of tires/rims this way you can change them yourself and saves costs. Don't get me wrong quattro will get you out of any snow but when it comes to stopping, winter rubber really makes a HUGE diff.

Winters all the way!! (I'm in Calgary as well).
I ordered mine with the 18" 's and am using those rims for my winters. I will get 20" 's for summer. I didn't order the tires from the dealer though. I'll be selling the all seasons.

Im in Calgary as well and although I have the 20's that are pure summers that force me to get winters, I am a big fan of having a set of summers and winters for our city (and the mountain drives).
That said its my first car with a system like Quattro and the ESP and I would think if your looking to save a few grand, will probably get by with the all seasons with this rig. The only other car I owned while in Calgary that I had put proper winter tires on was a BMW 540 and being such a heavy car and RWD (if I remember correctly) it was the best investment I made for that car.
I would say give it a go with your all seasons to start and if you feel its needed, pick up winters later on from some where like tire rack and then you can just use the all seasons for summer.
Keep me posted as would be interested in how well the all seasons with Quattro perform in our city.
Im in a similar spot with my wifes car (2010 VW GTI) that has all seasons so will give them a few weeks of winter to see if they are sufficient but if any issues will be getting a dedicated set of winters for her.
War city makes a great point though that really a small investment for the assurance of that extra bit of safety.....thanks war now I need to buy my wife tires or I will feel guilty

I think (I am no sure 100%) that on the GTI you can put steel rims and not necessarily alloy rims for winter. If this is correct it'll be be fairly inexpensive and I think on GTI you can get away with 15/16 inch winter tires.
For the Q5 18" will cost you anywhere between 1400-1800 installed but bare in mind that this will not only last you at least 5 season (depending on your driving habit) but it'll also means that your nice 19" tires you paid 1500 dollars for don't get damaged during winter.
With winter tires you will feel a HUGE difference. My winter tires last year saved me from getting into a fender bender in the parking lot of a ski resort where I had to suddenly break. My car was 40 days old it would have seriously sucked if I hit the guy.
Drive with your all season on the first snow as colbe110 suggested, and if you're not happy go to winter tires right away. Pay close attention to breaking distance.

I bought Yokohama Geolanders for my Q5 (still waiting for it...) and Yokohama Ice Guards for Tiguan. Highly recommended with excellent feedback. I paid 261$ + tax per tire (Yoko Geo) - price after discount from my local tire shop.

Audi 5.........get winters as the OEM Dunlops first snow fall 2009 were hell on wheels in my opinion the worst tire i've used on snow and ice. Got Scorpions here and wow what a difference in high speed traction which made going out to K country to snowshoe in the dead of winter a blast! As Warcity noted your stopping power is markedly better with winters..........having said that the Q5 is a hoot to operate in Calgary winters, just an all weather vehicle making trips out the mountains a pleasure!
