TireRack A4 Winter Package

Can anyone offer opinions on the "Recommended" TireRack Winter Tire Package for the 2011 A4?

Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D - 245/45/17
MSW Type 15

I'm not a huge fan of the Type 15s. Also, I've heard people saying they're partial to the Dunlop M3s.

Bottom Line: Has anyone come up with a "better" package from TireRack for a comparable price?

IMO a better size for winter driving would be 225/50/17 instead of a 245/45 .....narrower is better for snow. If you will ever consider a BBK you should go with 18's with an offset in the mid to low 30's ....225/45 would be a good tire size.

^ What he said about tire width! My OEM tires are 255/35/19 and I went with 215/50/17 wintersport M3's. The M3's are awesome (2 sets on previous Audis) and I would highly recommend them if you can get them in an appropriate size. Allen @ SimplyTire told me some peeps have had problems with the 3D's. Also, from prior experience, the Sport Edition wheels are quite strong so I got them as well (from TR shipped to Ogdensburg).

I asked my local dealer what they were offering for winters - the Dunlop 3D on stock rims - 225/50R17.

$1999 plus installation.... ridiculous.

However, I like the fact that they confirm the size and go with the Dunlop. Anyone with any experience with it for the A4? I'm looking around now and wondering what is going to be the best option.

Rather than rely on the dealer, you can determine the appropriate size using this calculator: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

I've been told that anything within 2% of diameter and with same load rating is fine.

Within 2%, 3%, I get pretty much the same info. However, for the '10 A4Avant the recommendation for size of winter tires is the same as for the all seasons - 245 40 18. Nobody is suggesting a narrower tire which are commonly accepted as providing improved snow performance. Is there a reason?

I ended up going for the 245/40/18 seen here:

2011 AUDI A4 QUATTRO S-LINE WINTER TIRE & RIM PACKAGE (DUNLOP 3D: *** TIRE & RIM PKGS *** - AUDI - 2011 AUDI A4 QUATTRO S-LINE WINT - Ottawa Tires Direct - Your #1 place for Winter Tires in Ottawa

I couldn't get a 225 18 that had the proper load rating. I didn't want to go down to a 17 for aesthetics.

If you're in Ottawa, Ottawa Tires Direct can put together any package for you which subsequently ends up on their website.
