Default Lost A3 key

My wife left her car (and house) keys on top of the car when we drove into work this morning. we've looked all over but can't find them.

I called the dealer and they gave a $300 + 80 recode price. OUCH

Anyone suggest any other options?

Thanks!

(THIS SUCKS!)

I see uncut ones on ebay for ~$20

Any idea how much (and where) it costs to get a key cut?

Can I reprogram the key with a Vag?

I had an A3 key replaced last month. 199.00 from the dealer and book time of 1 hour to program, although it took less than that.( Steele Audi, Halifax) I had to give the dealer both my regular key and the valet key as they said they had to reprogram them all. Not sure if that was really the case.

I have read that you can program a key yourself if you insert it after inserting a working key into the ignition first. I can't remember the procedure or where I read about it.

The dealer quoted around $300 I think with the reprogramming.

They gave me a bullshit story warning me about buying keys online, that they can 'lock up' the cars software. I think it's crap. Anyway, MUCH easier to just get audi to do it.

I've seen the reprogram with just the other key in the ignition. Unfortunately, I want both keys reprogrammed so someone just doesn't drive around the neighbourhood and find my car.

Thanks for the reply!

Don't buy eBay keys - they're made of steel - not brass. Most locksmiths won't touch them.

I got a key blade and got it cut for $40 from a local locksmith.

Here's another thread on the topic...
