stuffing a 4.2 in a 2.8 Avant
First question. Has anyone done this? I know that there are really no mods for the 2.8 but I use my car for towing and long distance driving and was wondering if it was feasible to do or if I'm just setting myself up for a headache.
The problem is that Audi made this great car (2001 A6 Avant) But only put the 2.8 L motor in it. I maybe should have gone with the Allroad but at the time this one was a great deal.
If any one has any suggestions, Even if it's to tell me not to bother I would welcome it.

The 4.2 will bolt in as far as engine mounts go, but you'll need to look into what to do with the transmission. In the end it's a lot of work and money to do swaps like this, and nearly invariably less expensive to just sell the car and buy a 4.2 A6/S6.
Thanks cheeba, problem is that it is very hard to find an A6 avant with a V8. I may just wait and get an Allroad instead. At least it will be the bi-turbo. Thanks for the insight.
As Cheeba said, the 4.2 swap is doable but depending on how much money you want to throw at it it might not be worth it.
The allroad options is a good idea, and you can pick up some around ~$8000-#10000 - but remember that the 2.7 bi-turbo will have their own set of challenges and costs. 4.2 allroads cant be found (or very rare) as they were a US option, so if you are looking for a V8 then you will have to look south of the border, but then you can also look for an S6.

As far as I know, bolting in the 4.2 is not straight forward at all. The C5 A6 4.2 V8 cars have a longer nose then the V6 cars because it was lengthened to fit the V8 engine. The V8 would not physically fit in your car without MAJOR modifications.
Unfortunately, I don't see any way that this swap would make financial sense.
Then again, I guess owning an Audi in general, doesn't make sense financially

Of course to me, doing a trailblazing engine swap doesn't really add up. Best to sell and buy a car with the motor you want. The all roads are real cool cars...and came with a 4.2 option (same as the B6/7 S4 engine actually) so look around. Two birds with one stone killed.
It is possible and it has been done before but it requires extensive body modifications. Keep in mind you're probably running the 5HP19FLA transmission which is not rated to handle the torque input of the 4.2 40V motor. The 5HP24FLA transmission which is found on the V8 equipped A6 already has a reputation of blowing up due to the 4.2 40V's massive torque. Your best bet is to install the PES G2 Supercharger or purchase a new vehicle all together.
