has anyone actually tried these? they seem pretty cheap considering the fact that i can't find anything else under $1000

I've ridden on them and they're not that bad for the money. Obviously, they are a cheap suspension, and you can't expect top-end ride quality and handling, or for them to last more than a few years. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, though - it's not that much more to jump up to entry-level Konis, Bilstein PSS, or H&R Street coilovers.
