OK...so I now have my long awaited 2006 A4 Avant on the road however from the 1st day I received it (5 months ago...I know torture seeing it sit there but not be able to drive it) it was running rough.

I was getting the ever so common idle fluctuations ranging from 700 rpm in park to all of a sudden 2000 and then down again. I got a CEL the other day and it was a P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1) code. Now I cleaned out my MAF with electrical contact cleaner and checked the boot/hose and there does not seem to be any leaks. Fuel filter I have not swapped out but it could be a culprit although a slim chance possibility. When at a stop light the car runs pretty rough and if I take my foot off the brake, the car moves forward but surging along with the idle fluctuations. If I put her into Neutral, the idle stays around 800 but if I give it gas, the idle starts to go up and keeps going up to 2000 or so and it stays there until I drop it into Drive.

When I am driving (this could be a tranny thing and not engine related) but I press on the gas from a stop and it seems like there is a lag for a second or two and then it takes off. When breaking and the car gets down to around 25 km/h the transmission likes to almost slam into a lower gear. Is that normal for the tiptronic transmission or could this also be related to my engine issue? I have always had 5 speeds so these transmissions are new to me.

Think I should start swapping out some vacuum lines and the PCV or what do you all suggest I try? Thanks in advance guys, always appreciated!!

 

What engine does the car have? I would start of by scaning it with a vag com and clearing CEL's then do a throttle body alignment.

I VAG'ed the car initially to get the P0171 and cleared that but it just eventually comes back the same day. I can try a throttle body alignment and see what happens I suppose but I think something more is at play. Cheers for the reply!

 

Could be a fuel pressure sensor(located right on fuel pump). Audi had a recall on then.

 

I have the same engine same years 2006 2.0 T and i haven't recieved any thing from Audi regarding a recall, I have the same problem as the O.P

 

You have to do to the dealer and check if you are affected. I bought my car brand new and never received any recall information by mail(only some pages for the service manual)

Sometimes you might not be listed for a recall, but part might be bad.

Problem that you have is one or combination of following:
1. Bad fuel pressure regulator valve
2. Defective Coils
2. Bad PVC valve
3. Torn DV valve.

 

Zoidbort you car is equiped with 6 speed Tiptronic transmission not S Tronic/DSG. A4's didn't come with S Tronic/DSG only A3's.

 

Yeah when I imported mine from the US into Canada Audi told me there were no outstanding recalls on my car. When did this recall campaign launch?
Also I have checked my coil packs, all good as too are the plus and wire harness. When it comes to vacuum hoses, well there are so few compared to my 1.8T. Thanks for the replies thus far guys!

 

Technically I should pull a code if my coils were toast as it would cause a misfire.

 

I had the same problem with an old Chevy a few years ago, iirc it was the ignition control module.
