Question Engine Management System

With all of the problems including rough running engines, alarms about misfires & engine running lean etc. has anyone actually considered removing the OEM computer and harness and using something like the Tec3 or Megasquirt engine management system? Would any of these be compatible with the Tipronic? I've done the searches but could not find any applicable threads on this subject. As a side note, I have seen 2 late model Suburu WRXs with Tec3 at a car show and an M5 with Megasquirt and these people were quite happy with the flexibility.

Comments please.

I have not even heard of those. But before I check them out I am thinking that the M5 was an older version? The electronics in an Audi are way too complex for you just to swap it out. However I will check the system you speak of and then give you another opinion.

why would u be trying to mess with an audi ecu? theres no problems with the ecu, just when some of the "disposable" parts that need replacing.. need replaced

The ECU isn't broken but lots of the inputs to the ECU are malfunctioning on a regular basis, much more often than most cars. I have 2 Acuras and only once did I get a "Check Engine" or "Mil" alarm. And it was a cheap EGR Pressure sensor switch replacement. That was more than 2 years ago. Why do you think some of the guys are removing their entire A4 emission systems out (on the other A4 forums)? If it wasn't for the emission testing lots of other people would have followed suit. Lots of conversions are going on using the Tec3 and Megasquirt systems. Do a search and jump on one of their forums. I also belong to the Rennlist (Porsche) forums and lots of conversions there too. I swear by the awd system in my audi and it is my 4th in a row but this A4 is causing me to drink more. My last repair at Owasco to solve the misfire cost me over $1200 and after changing almost everything they now tell me that the vacuum pump is most likely bad and that is over $500. I haven't changed it yet so the car idles more rough that when I first took it in. Hmmm. Glad I got that off my chest. Man, I love this car, I just need it to run like it looks.

uhh, thats rediculous.. i never had a problem with my car ever. and i never heard in any audi forums like audizine, a4mods, or audiforums(us) talk about it.

u sure it wasnt a CP ? rough idle entirely always fall down to it. its a more common problem that what u explained it when rough idling
