can you upgrade the stereo but keep the factory head unit and the 6 pac?

Yup, you can do that.

Call a car audio shop and let them know what you want to do. As long as you have money it'll happen.

In fact, a couple years a go i ran into a guy with a TT with a complete system in this car, but that included a dvd head unit.

Car sounded amazing and was totally custom with fiberglass subwoofer enclosure.
