struts and springs question
I don't know the answer but I think you have the correct thinking going on. The 2.8 has two more cylinders and therefore is more heavy. I think they would feel soft.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it depends on whether it is quattro or not. If it is quattro they are interchangeable, if not, they aren't. Also, I dont believe you can interchange with avant and sedan.

The effect isn't very large, so I wouldn't say it's a huge issue. Most manufacturers don't have a specific spring rate for each possible combination anyway (eg, on the B6, it can be sedan or Avant, quattro or non, 3.0 or 1.8T), but do call up H&R and ask what the difference in spring rates are and decide for yourself whether you're willing to accept the compromise.
There's no engine/body style/drivetrain-specific shocks that I'm aware of, by the way, unless you're buying STaSIS, then you can talk to them and get the valving fine tuned.
