I've seen some aftermarket blacked-out headlight housings for sale, and want to know if anyone has baked their headlights to black them out?

And by "baked", I mean actually put them in the oven to separate the housing from the lens, painted the housing, then siliconed them back together.

I've done this to my WRX, and am curious to know if its possible on the audis...

 

Sis is a Gehman chhhhaa. I have seen guys tint them out, and also there are kits out there that come with black backgrounds

Some C5 A6 folks have baked their headlights in an oven to get them apart for modifications.

Hey Dylan,

I had a small crack along the top of my passenger side headlamp assembly on my TT and after hearing the cost of replacement, opted to fix it myself. Moisture had been getting inside the headlamp so I wanted to take it apart to clean it before sealing up the crack.

Removing the headlamp involved removing the front bumper cover, but that's another story. Once the headlamp was out I removed the four clips that hold the lens to the rest of the assembly and then used a heat gun along the seam. After a couple of minutes of heat and with a bit of prying, it popped apart.

I was able to thoroughly clean out the inside of the headlight assembly and use a little Crazy Glue on both the inside and outside of the crack. The bezel inside the assembly could easily be painted at this point. Personally I liked the stock colour as it matched my car.

When it was ready to go back together I heated the silicone on the headlamp assembly, put the lens back on and reattached the clips. Once it cooled it was sealed like it was never opened. (Not sure if "baking" the headlamp would allow you to reuse the factory silicone or not.)

The headlamp hasn't leaked since and it looks better than when I bought the car a year ago.

That being the long winded answer of "yes," it can be done.

I baked my headlights. just pop off the four of five metal clips, and put the headlights in the oven for 10-15 minutes at about 65 celcius, or 100 farenheight (spelling?). Im sure they get hotter in the arizona sun, so no real worry about melting anything. Careful when you take them out - they are hot!

The housing should slowly peel apart. To re-assemble, heat them up again, and squeeze them together. Put the clips back on while they are hot. Once they cooled off, take the metal clips off and silicone the entire sealing surface. Re-assemble clips and your done.

 

I wonder if that'd work for the tails?
