Q5- New RIV requirement for DRL

I purchased a 2010 Q5 earlier this year in the United States and plan on importing the vehicle to Canada in the next few months. In February, Transport Canada (RIV) issued a new requirement to have the MMI reprogrammed to remove the option to turn off the Daytime Running Lights that is available on Q5's (and other Audis with MMI) sold in the USA. What is involved with having this done in Canada? Can it be done easily? Cost?

This is a 2 minute vag-com software change. Very very very easy to do. I've done it to my cars (to allow me to turn DRL on and off). You want to do the reverse.

Thank you for your quick reply! I appreciate the expertise of an experienced Audi owner. Obviously, I need to own or gain access to a vag-com cable and software to do this. What do you recommend? Also, if I do this myself, would Transport Canada accept my work as certified? Or am I better to go through a dealer? Do you know how much dealers charge for this?

You can buy the cable/software from either the Ross-tech website or you can buy replica's from ebay. The replica's work just as good however you cannot do software updates.

However, if transport Canada requires a certified confirmation of work, I would recommend you ask Audi US to do it. They will likely charge you for an hour of labor.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for this information on VagCom. I checked the Audienthusiast website to review the codes for various functions. Interestingly there isn't one that specifically addresses my problem: to disable the MMI option that allows vehicle operators to turn off the DRL's. This is possible on USA Audi vehicles with MMI.

The RIV website identified this requirement in February of this year, so it is perhaps a new issue for Audi owners who wish to import to Canada.

I am looking forward to the growing list of VagCom owners and thank everyone for their interest.

There is an option that allows you to enable or disable the MMI menu which allows you to turn DRL on and off. I have enabled this on my Canadian car which means to disable it on a US car you reverse the instruction. This can be done I am 20000% sure as I have done it 3 times. I can even do this for you and video tape the instruction and put it on youtube if necessary.

The question is not so much "how" to do it the question is if you should do it yourself or have someone who is certified do it otherwise RIV may not recognize it as legitimate work.

My suggestion is to have an Audi dealer in the US do this for you.

I agree with Warcity and I am in the process of trying to find a dealer in the US who will do this work. I will advise when I complete the process.
