Hi !

Is anyone aware of a fix for the Q5 power steering failure ?
I know this blog dates a while, but I've been experiencing this problem with my 2014 Q5 since I purchased it from an Audi Dealership in January 2015 at 17 000km.

Always -20C , happens when I turn motor off and restart shortly after. And then ''Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!'' alert appears and of course NO more power steering.

If I let the car rest 10 to 30 minutes and restart engine, the problem goes away .. for a while ! I did have to drive home once (4km) with no power steering cause I was freezing in the car !

Audi dealership know there is a problem, but are not advancing a solution. It's very scarry , if this happens while I'm driving it could be very dangerous.

My local garage reported error code 7343409 (my Audi dealership is 700km away .. I know I really wanted an Audi). I reported the code to my Audi dealership but they say they can't rely on a code from anyone else and unfortunately my local garage errassed the code, so it no longer appears when Audi passes the scan .

Thanks for any comments , help !
Maria

I had the steering failure twice, lost power steering and warning on dash. The two times failed, there was no way to reset failure mode. It failed while I was driving the 1st time. The Audi dealer replaced my steering rack and pinion assembly two years in a row. This year 2016-17 in the winter in Minnesota we only had a few days at -10F to -18F and no repeat failures. The local dealer told me that they know every year certain Q5, SQ5, A4, A5 will have this steering failure. The new R&P assy part number they installed had to be ordered from Germany took one week. They gave me a free rental audi until fix completed. The Part Number was 8R1-423-055-BG. The 1st replacement in Jan 2014 was same Part number as this new one but was a rev ending in AJ. I was told the steering motor on the new rack and pinion assy is stronger and tighter tolerances. I would suggest anyone with this failure must have the dealer replace the rack and pinion.

Thanks Mark !

Audi USA seems to be ahead of Audi Canada on this !
My local garage just advised me that Audi was aware of the problem and have extended the garanty to 180 000km on this, it's the only info I have for now, I'll post if I get more détails on this extension !

Kind regards, Maria

Hi Mark !

Well, so far I'm out of luck with my dealer ! The answer I got from them :

''Yes we have experimented this type of situation that is mostly related to cold temperature. Although AUDI is aware of these particular situations, they have not, to my knowlege, issued any warranty extensions. By opening work orders for the problem on your vehicle, we report the number of visits to Audi. If you require more information, you could always contact Audi client services at 1-800-411-9988''.

So, no fix , no nothing !

My first AUDI is pretty much starting to look like it will be my LAST Audi ! But I will contact client service, don't expect much but who knows !

Hey guys - I stumbled upon this forum while investigating my recent S5 power steering failure last week (-30C). Same issues, `Steering Defective!' and `Do not drive vehicle!'.

I emailed Darryl Malone and he advised me to complete this online form, which I just did:
Reporting potential safety defects in motor vehicles, tires, and child car seats - Transport Canada

I am the original owner, ~70,000 km and my warranty just expired 4 months ago. Dealer serviced throughout the warranty period. They have quoted me $4,000 for a new steering rack plus cost of alignment. I've had an independent shop quote me $3000 just for the rack alone, and 5 week wait time.

While I was at the dealership I overhead a woman having the same issue with her Q5, and they are well aware of this issue.

Cheers.

Thanks "Steering Defect" for the link to Transport Canada. My 2016 Q5 had the same issue but I was parked at time. I restarted it and I got home no issues. Weird. It was replaced under warranty but I only had 17k on it so it was not a wear and tear issue. It is a serious issue and should be reported because it affects many models of Audi. I hope everyone does fill out a TC complaint so it gets on the radar.
Cheers

Just received a letter from Audi today extending the steering system warranty to 10 years 200,000km on my 2013 Q5.

What did you do to get that letter? I have the same year (2013) Q5 and 3 days ago I got the alert. But the car was sitting under the sun for 2 months (I got sick).
Would you please be so kind and share the knowledge you have on the process so that others can benefit of it?
Thanks!

Absolutely nothing. It just arrived. I've had no issues with my steering in 90K.

Had this happened at higher speed this could have been dangerous, and advanced warning may help others. On a cold Saturday morning (-21C) I warmed the SQ5 for 10 mins before packing the family and heading out. First kilometer was fine. After heading up a steep hill I made a stop, turned right, and the red steering wheel fault light came on with 3 warning beeps. The steering wheel became extremely stiff and could not turn enough to avoid a parked car in the opposite lane. Luckily there was little traffic and I was able to simply stop before hitting the car. I backed up and experimented with the steering wheel to realize it was barely steerable but only with a LOT of force. Under the red fault warning a message said to stop driving the car immediately. No kidding, had we been on an offramp at 100+ km/h this could have been a high velocity accident!

Audi "care" as usual is simply a polite voice on the line, and said the delay for towing was 90 mins. That seemed too long a wait with a 2 year-old in the back seat at -21C so I took the car back home slowly using the early morning deserted side streets. Audi "care" had also said that the car would sit in the dealership lot until it reopened on Monday morning so I put the car in the garage overnight hoping that warming it up would prove helpful. No luck as the same red fault message and rock hard steering response remained, so on Sunday I called back Audi "care" for a flatbed tow truck. To make this story complete, the first guy who showed up came in a CAA van (no flatbed) wanting to boost the car... Finally, after a polite exchange of words with the polite voice on the line and another 90 mins later, the SQ5 was on a flatbed on the way towards the dealership.

So the aim of this post is to warn people that if the electromechanical steering system fails while driving the steering wheel will become rock hard and barely responsive. Be ready to steer with all your strength... At the present time I'm not certain whether I still trust this car will keep the family safe.
I'm very interested to hear how the dealership follows up. Keep us posted. I'm glad you are all safe.
