Default Selector/Neutral switch

Hi, i'm new to the site, but have heard good things.I have a a 1998 a4 1.8t quattro tiptronic, i have lost tiptronic as well as 5th gear, plus reverse wasn't wrkn for a bit. it wrks now but i shudders wen i engage it. i was told that it is either the selector switch or the neutral switch, most likely the former. but i'm not 100% sure. can anyone shed some light on this for me? and is fixing this something that i can do myself? thanx in advance

Chris B.
