2009 TT Roadster roof problem

2009 Audi TT 2.0L Roadster

I am unable to close my roof...again!
It had the same problem in June and I had to take it to Audi for re-programming ( $100 charge to my extended warranty )
Does this happen to anyone else?

It happened to me twice on my previous car (2006 S4 Cabriolet). To go through the reset, you have to do a full open/close cycle manually. Follow the instruction in the owner manual on how to do it.
The special tool/key should be in the compartment at the far left of your dash (you have to have the driver door open to see/access it).

Forgot to mention: this happens sometimes when the cycle gets interrupted or if you don't open/close the roof completely.
It also happens when a sensor does not do its job... then you might need the dealer if it happens often.

Re: 2009 TT Roadster roof problem

Hi,
I am having the same problem regularly. The problem is with the position sensor of one of the flap and sometime with a position sensor on the lock in front of the roof. I am using my VAG cable to reset the roof and then I am good for another 10 days until it happens again and I have to manually close it and use the VAG cable again to reset.

Openning always works automatically. Closing is sometime the problem when the defective sensors act up. First open the valve for the hydaulic in the trunk. Second, manually close the roof. Third (I never use the key but the automatic switch for this) you have to bring the roof close enough to the windshield and then open the latch with the switch (by openning the roof) and then when the latch is open, reverse the switch to finish closing the roof by locking the latch into the windshield.

Let me know if I am not being clear here. I know how to do it but it is not that easy to describe.

Jean-Claude

Can you confirm if the dealer was changing only the sensors or the entire flap motor (s) including the sensor. How much was the repair everytime?

The previous owner of my car had them changed twice already 4 years ago. I had only occasionnal problem for 2 years but last summer was terrible. I had to reset the roof on a weekly basis using my VAGCOM cable. Takes 2-3 minutes but the problem is always when it happens at work and I have to manually close the roof... I had my home laptop and VAGCOM with me all the time last fall since it was happenning way too often. Considering changing the sensors this year... What do you think?

Re: 2009 TT Roadster roof problem

I believe I may have found on Youtube a better way to reset my roof when the flap motor sensor is acting up.

It looks like the flap motors on our cars have 2 readings for telling if the flap is open/close (we have 2 flaps: righ and left). One reading is a position sensor that says that the roof is open/closed and another one a resistor sensor giving a reading of the resistance when open/close.

The problem on my car is when the left flap position sensor believe it is open but the resistance is still over the low threshold therefore not confirming the open status. This send an error message to the car stopping the roof function to avoid breaking the flap (which is open anyway but the car can't confirm it for sure)

What you do with the VAG Com interface is reset the minimum value threshold that the sensor needs to see in order to confirm that the flap is up/open (giving space to the roof to close).

I did this this week-end and after more than 12 ups/downs everything is still working fine. Has not been like that for over a year... I am hoping this reset might have fixed my roof problem, at least for longer than a few days. As it only takes 5 minutes to go through this procedure, I don't mind doing it every couple of weeks during the summer. Cheap alternative to an expensive fix (that never last more than a couple of years anyway).

I will keep you posted here on how this reset is holding up...

PS: I have a VAG Com cable and live in Laval. If anyone has a similar problem around here, I would be happy to help.

Re: 2009 TT Roadster roof problem

For a really good explaination of how the whole convertible top works, refer to the Audi TT Self Study Program 391:
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=10594&d=1430165792

One of the most common failures is due to the Convertible Top Flap Servo. The Convertible Top Flap Servo has two primary components; the Motor (V381/V383) and the Potentiometer (G596/G597). When energized, the motor drives the potentiometer gears which move the servo arm and ball link to raise and lower the flaps. The potentiometer sends a real-time position signal to the J256 Convertible Top Operational Control Unit so it knows if the flap is open or closed. If the potentiometer value is outside the expected range, it will generate an implausible signal error and stop the top from further operation.

Further investigation of this topic on other Audi TT sites revealed that excessive grease on the Servo Potentiometer contacts is very common. This may be causing a fault error (implausible signal) during VCDS scans. Simply replacing it with a new Servo may not make the problem go away if the new Servo has the same problem. The only way to know for sure is to open up the Servo case and perform an inspection. If excessive grease is noted on the contacts, clean them as described in this post. If, after reassembly, the fault still exists, at least you’ve eliminated one possible cause. If the fault does goes away, you just saved yourself the cost of a new Servo.

You can follow this link for a DIY on cleaning the Servo:
