DuPont report finds white is still the new black
By Justin Couture, Sympatico/MSN Autos

Not only is white the new black, white also happens to be the new silver ... at least as far as automobile colours are concerned.

DuPont, one of the world’s largest suppliers of paint for automobile has released its annual Global Color Popularity Report which looks at vehicle colours on a worldwide basis.

For the North American market, whites topped the list for the second year in a row taking 20 per cent of all vehicle sales. This figure is a combination of solid white 16 per cent, and pearl whites at four per cent.

Black tied with silver at 17 per cent each; 11 percent of consumers chose solid black, and six per cent black with pearl effect.

As for genuine colours, blue, red and brown trailed at 13, 11 and five per cent.

Despite being a buzz word in advertising and marketing, green was near the bottom accounting for a meagre three percent, just above yellow and gold.

Hopefully there's a shift to a less dreary colour pallet soon - when combined, white, black, silver and gray account for two-thirds of vehicles sold in North America.

DuPont says that on a worldwide scale, blue is growing in popularity. A number of auto manufacturers have started linking the colour blue to nature (eg. Benz BlueTEC, BMW BluePerformance, Hyundai i-Blue, etc.) Maybe next year, blue will be the new black?

A couple of fun facts from the survey:

- Nearly every single geographical region surveyed selected silver or white as a top colour with the exception of Europe, which ranks black as first (26 per cent; 22 per cent metallic, four per cent solid).

- Russia and India were the only two countries to have a colour (red) in the top three.

- China is the only country to purchase orange vehicles in any particular quantity (three per cent.) The Chinese don’t appear to like white as it accounts for only one per cent.

- Brazillians favour brown/beige as much as blue, at three per cent.

Interesting stuff, white suits the TT really well, both mk1 & 2 I feel. I had my heart set on getting a white one and actually held out buying a TT until I found a white one! Go figure it was the beggining of a trend.......
