This is why I was hell bent on getting mine changed by 100,000km's at the latest. I really feel for you and sorry about your luck. I've read so many instances of the the timing belts letting go on the 1.8T around that mileage.

Damn that sucks.

Thats like my gf's sister. She has a 2007 Mazda with 101,000km on it. Has a warranty till 100,000. It's getting a new diff put in right now NOT under warranty.

Sucks when they break right after the waranty (or 5,000km after the belt replacement time)

The engine lasts fine, the timing belt itself - not so good. When it goes destruction follows because it's an interference engine. Valves and pistons colide when the belt breaks. You have to really make sure you change the timing belt before the required maintenance interval which I believe is 100,000km's. I did mine at 93,000 because I was absolutely paranoid about it breaking after reading so many horror stories on the forum's. Great car & motor, except for this aspect.

replacement was first set at 160,000km by audi then reduced to 128,000 after so many failed and when i bought the car for pfaff in newmarket last year i knew that their was trouble with the eirlier models so i asked if the belt was changed and was told that the 2003 had a timing chain. never trust a used car sales person.

The timing belt is probably the week link in an otherwise bullet-proof engine. The 2010 cars (except the TTS which is a 2009 carry-over) all have timing chains. Too bad it took them so long to correct this obvious weekness.

Same here. I was paranoid as well and had mine done at 90,000 km. That sucks though. Hopefully you can work out a deal somehow. I would point out that the documentation is wrong to Audi - isn't this the subject of potential litigation?
