Toying with the idea of tuning the 3.2 TT
 

Hello all,

I recently got my hands on a 2006 TT 3.2 S-Line Coupe. It is all stock at present. I was wondering what, if any tuning and mods I should consider to increase performance, or is it a case of spend a lot for a small increase in HP?

Best bang for your buck would be a tune and exhaust. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot more.

Thanks mikeh. That is pretty much what my mechanic said. He commented that there are not many mods that are available for the VR6, and those that are out there are expensive, and yield fairly minor gains.

Which is not so bad, because at 250bhp, the VR6 is pretty fine in my book.

Well, I got convonced to do a software flash to my TT. I was contacted via the Vancouver Audi Club board by one of the local shops that specializes in turbo kits. He said Unitronics had a nice package for the ECU and the DSG transmission that increases the HP, and improves the shifting of the DSG transmission.

So, seeing as the total bill was under 1K, I pulled the plug and went over there. My car is one of the last Mk 1 3.2L TT's and as luck would have it, had a different ECU than the one the Unitronics software was originally written for. So, they did a full read of both the ECU and DSG, sent the files to Unitronics, and then the wizards there wrote new files for my car.

The flash of the software didn't take long. The tech spent about 90 minutes loading and fine tuning the maps.

Then I got it out on the road. In D mode, it moved pretty good. The "pause" from brake to acceleration ffrom a dead stop is GONE! So far the DSG side is working. The shifting in D mode seemed to be a lot smoother, and shifts were at a better RPM than stock. So far so good. Four wheel chirps from a dead stop in D mode were easy.

In manual mode, shifts were a lot smoother, and the red line is up past 7K. Acceleration was fast and smooth, and felt a lot more responsive.

So far, the car drives better than the stock software. Next weekend, weather allowing, I'll rip of the Fraser Canyon and try it out in all three modes (D, M and S). Keep you all posted.

Oh, and Unitronics claims an increase to 270hp with this suite of software. Without a dyno read, I won't really know, but it sure does feel better so far.

HPA Motorsporrts in Vancouver has upgrades to up to 400 HP as well as DSG and engine software.I have a Unitronic flash on my 3.2 DSG and ecu and it is far superior driving than stock.I recently added the performance Haldex from HPA and it is fantastic.So there are options out there just look.

Yes, Ben, HPA can upgrade the 3.2 to 400. So can CTS. That, however, requires a turbo kit, and it would be beaucoup big bucks. So far I am happy with the way the Unitronics software is working out. The shifting with the DSG software is definitely better, and the motor is more responsive (the lag in D when you hit the gas pedal is gone).

I have thought of getting the Haldex performance controller. However, I think I will look at a suspension upgrade before that.

Just curious, what does Haldex performance controller do???

Correct me if I am wrong, I can recall that there are at least two type of Haldex performance chips, one is for street, the other is for track. And the stock Haldex have a torque distribution 95:5; but the performance one can change it to 70:30 something.

Well, that sounds very lovely and convincing. How is your TT lately? I am thinking to get the same done too......if I can find a unitronics dealer in my region.

Bingwei, the car is running flawlessy, whether or not I am in stop and go traffic in D, or lighter traffic and running in M mode. The engine software definitely has given a nice boost to HP and torwque (this is anecdotal, as I have not had it on a Dyno), and the DSG software has really smoothed out the shifting.

As to dealers, check Unitronics web site. I do believe they list their dealers there.
