Engine light just came on Code P1296

my engine light on my 2002 Audi TT quattro just came on. I read the
code and it came up with code P1296 Manufacturer Control Fuel Air
Metering. Can you tell me what that is please?

Is your fuel cap loose?

Hi I turned the check engine light off and it has not come back on as
of yet. The fuel cap was not loose. Any thoughts on why the light may
have come on?

Dirty O2 sensor, water in the gasoline, loose wire, gunk on whatever
sensor measures airflow (I hear it's a MAF on VWs)?

One error is probably OK to ignore.

for the uninitiated... how do you read the code?

Re: Engine light just came on Code P1296

Looks like it could be the coolant temperature sensor (G62 from that link), a common part that people upgrade to the 'green top' even if the original isn't having any problems.

Should be a $10 - $15 part. The new one will be a green top from the dealership. Easy install too, just vent the coolant reservoir first and make sure the car is cool enough before swapping it out

Re: Engine light just came on Code P1296

Next step after the CTSensor would be the thermostat. I have the same thing on my 02 A4 and I'm at the thermostat step now. I'll let you know how it turns out.

BTW, if your Check Eng. Light goes out it just means you've gone several cycles of turning the car off and then running it again without having the code thrown, which means it's intermittent. Eventually it will stay on constantly - from my experience.
