Default $2000 Temperature Gauge

The temp gauge on my 2005 TT is not working properly. They replaced the temp sending unit with no result. So now they figure to fix it they have to replace the entire instrument cluster, cost is about $2000. It is an insane design that requires the entire cluster to be replaced when one small item like the temperature gauge fails. Has anyone tried to install an after-market gauge like a Stewart Warner?

The Mk. I tt is prone to instrument pod failure. Temp and/or fuel gauge issues are usually the start of more problems. Some say the internal components are easily damaged over time by high heat. The best solution I think can be found on eBay or Amazon. At least two companies, one in Idaho, the other in Chicago, will upgrade your pod's connections with a three day turnaround. Removal isn't too difficult. Well worth the cost and trouble if you have the dreaded instrument pod problems. Good luck.

Use VCDS to perform an instrument output test to confirm if indeed your dash pod is the problem (I don't trust dealerships).

If that is the case, you can either send your dash pod out for repair, (many listing on google ~$200), or if you're brave enough, you can actually order the pod stepper motor online (~$20ish) and swap it yourself.

I know this thread is old, but hope you haven't spent the $2k yet!!

The entire gauge panel is covered by a lawsuit. I don't know if it has expired, but check into lawsuits in the first generation TTs. My instrument panel works ok so I did not replace. Audi did cover full replacement costs back in the day, not sure of 2'nd owners, or timeframes.

This is old news now, but the gauge was fine, and the sending unit was fine, it was the Thermostat that failed. Still, they had to take a lot of parts off to get at it. $60 for the thermostat, $700 for labour. When you replace your timing belt do the thermostat and water pump etc., at the same time.
