Some of the articles I've read said that VW only pulled it off because they had merged with Porsche...which sells less than 100,000 units/year. Meanwhile, VW is ahead by 400,000 units.

I'm sure the big car buying incentive in germany must have helped tremendously.. (ie: scrap your old car, a bit like in the US but much bigger)
