Getting a New Key
So the A4 I just got only has one key with it.
Whats the best way to get another switchblade key made? Do I need to go to the dealer? Funnily enough, but I found a VW switchblade in the trunk that fits into the ignition! Could I have that programmed to work? S. |
Re: Getting a New Key
the only way to get the key is from a dealer ship sadly. I don't know about the second one

Re: Getting a New Key
Yep, you'll have to get it from the dealer and I think they're around $350
|
Re: Getting a New Key
Holly **** I thought it was about 100 lol. Can someone verify that.

Re: Getting a New Key
1998 A4? then it's got the two-peice key/remote, you will have to buy them seperately from dealership, they are like 300 bucks + labor to program key/remote to your immobilizer. Usually dealership charges 1/2 hour labor for programming.
Make sure you bring your ID and ownership when you go order your key, dealership will have to verify the owner of the vehicle, otherwise they won't order it for you |
Re: Getting a New Key
Mine is an 04.
I use a private shop. Guess Ill see if he can order & program keys. What about just a door key for emergencies? S. |
Re: Getting a New Key
The answer is no. Only an Audi dealer can program the keys. If they key could just be ordered and programmed by anyone, there would be a lot of stolen Audis. Do you really need the flip key, or do you just want a backup key in case you lose your main key. If it's just for backup get a cheaper key. My car came with 2 flip keys - 1 regular key - and one tiny wallet key. Just order the regular key and I'm sure the price will be cheaper.

Re: Getting a New Key
Yeah just a back up key is all I need.
Although I like having the settings programmed to the individual key... S. |
Re: Getting a New Key
For those that do not use "search function" on the forum:
1. Only The Audi dealer can program the immobilizer part of key- programming. 2. Remote programming is described in Owner's Manual. 3. Actual key cut is $5 (at VW). 4. Hardware - various sources=> choice is yours (I had very positive experience with ebay) |
Re: Getting a New Key
A local guy in Oakville has the machine and will do it for way cheaper. I just had a set of 3 done about month ago. See the exhaustive thread in DIY. There may be a local guy around you in AB as well.

Re: Getting a New Key
Hang on. I just want to make sure I have this clear. There is a private mechanic's shop (not Audi Dealer) who had the equipment to program Audi Keys?? Sounds like a security concern to me. If I'm not mistaken all Audi Keys have computer chips in them that are programmed to match the car.
|
Re: Getting a New Key
Yeah they do. The keys need to be cut based on VIN, then they all have to be matched at once to the immobiliser through custom hardware, then they're individually programmed to the door locks.
Once Audi VW went through that lawsuit for having a monopoly on these keys they were obligated to allow indys to cut and program them. Not many of these guys are around but they're starting to pop up. This all happened about a year ago. So yes- not an Audi dealer able to provide this service. |
Re: Getting a New Key
I also need to get a new key made after losing the flip key.
(Lost far away from home that should not be tracable back to my car I hope!) Can anyone provide the address of the guy that can do this.. Will also want to order the flip part as well and reprogram it. I have not yet gone to the dealer on this as I figure it will cost and arm and leg for replacement. Thanks Richard |
Re: Getting a New Key
I'll PM you his email address. You can take it from there.

Re: Getting a New Key
I think that occurs when the new keys are coded to the car. It doesn't carry over old key data, does it?

Could you PM me the shop's info. My b5 came with only 1 key and I need another made. Thanks |
Re: Getting a New Key
Most Audis can have one to four (sometimes eight) keys coded to the immo. So the best way to do this, is to have all the keys you want coded at the same time, that way the shop/dealer can make sure that only these keys will work on your car...
|
Re: Getting a New Key
In fact it has to be that way. All the keys that need to be set up and coded have to done all at once. You can't do them separately. It generates a new code on each run and old data doesn't carry over ... afaik ... and this is immo I'm talking about. Setting up the door locks can be done one by one but a master still needs to be present.
