Checking boost, how to tell if turbo is ok?

Hi All,
New to the forums, and not quite yet an owner. IF all goes well, i'll be picking up a 01 A4 1.8TQ with only 105K tomorrow morning :-D

At any rate, I searched the forums, but couldn't find a method to determine how much boost the car is making, other than installing an aftermarket boost gauge. My old VW Corrado G60 had a method of viewing the boost through the gauge cluster display by following a sequence with the key/cruise control buttons. Any secret hidden modes on the Audi's like this? I suspect the turbo is fine, as the car drives good, and seems to perform well, but it would be nice to know for sure.
Thanks,
Gary

If you have access to VAG-COM, you could log Engine Block 115 while WOT accelerating thru 2nd & 3rd gears. This will tell you the ECU Requested Boost vs Actual Boost. If the numbers consistently differ more than 20mBar then there is a problem, otherwise boost is good.
