Dension Gateway Five - Montreal Installation?

Hi guys,

I have just dropped over $300 for a Dension Gateway Give for my Audi A4 2006 2.0T with Symphony 2 and after several attempts to install it myself I finally gave up.

I was wondering if any of you know any garages/dealers/people around Montreal who are familiar with such products and could install it for me? I called a few and they haven't heard of Dension stuff before.

Thanks!
Dan.

I've been interested in one of these myself but I'm curious as to what problem you've run into? I've installed other Denison stuff on my own with no problems. Did you get it all plugged in and put together and it didn't work or did you have problems with the physical installation?

I am having a similar if not the same problem. It would help to know the specifics of your car - see my rationale below. I talked to Enfig.com in New Jersey today (see their many Dension Youtube install videos) - they say it should work, but don't want to divulge anything because I didn't buy it from them.

If someone has a Dension Gateway Five that does work in A4 B6 or B7 with Symphony II, please speak up on how you got it to work.

My car:

I have a 2006 A4 2.0T Avant w/ Tiptronic, Canadian spec car. Symphony II with 6 disc in-dash changer.

The problem:

I get power to the bluetooth dongle and ipod cable, but I can't get the head unit to see the device. That is, when I hit the CD button, apparently a 2nd push should cause it to cycle to CDC mode (the external CD player that the Symphony II unit presumabl supports). Steering wheel is exactly as shown in the Dension 'manual' (which is useless, IMO - it doesn't even go so far as to tell you that the black wire should be a ground wire...). According to Dension, this should be plug and play.

Dension Gateway Five:

The Gateway Five I have has a harness with two red plugs, one black receivers, one red receiver and a smaller black plug that plugs into the Dension unit. On my car, their is only one large factory harness connector that plugs into the head unit, plus two smaller ones for (brown and black). When I plug in the Dension harness, the two reds plugs find a home in the back of the Symphony II. My factory harness plugs into the red Dension harness receiver, which leaves one black receiver empty. Presumably, this is where you would plug in the Audi harness coming from the Nav, at least according to the schematic on the back of the head unit. Not sure if that correct that one Dension harness plug has no connection to it...

I suspect it has something to do with the configuration of the car. This is car without the 'technology package', i.e. it doesn't have photochromic mirrors, Homelink, or a multi-function computer that most Audis have. The spinners on the steering wheel work, but the Mode and Voice Control buttons show 'NO FUNCTION' on the instrument cluster display when pushed. I think the inability for the Dension to be recognized may have something to do with this decontented specification. I think it's fixable, but without a VAG COM to mess with, I am not sure:

I am guessing that there are some changes to the coding that need to happen with a VAG COM or 1551 in order to enable the external CD Changer and, in all likelihood, to activate the steering wheel controls.

I have quite a few pictures I have taken of the bits and pieces and the head unit labels if that helps anyone... let me know.

That's my story - any advice on what to do next?

Cheers,

Alex

Just did an install of a Gateway Blue in my B6 A4. Ran into a similar problem where the stereo wasn't recognizing the unit. Just would say "No CD". Turned out the black ground wire wasn't grounding where I had attached it. Attached to a screw on the back of the stereo instead of a screw on a random bit of metal in the dash and now it's working. Hopefully a helpful bit of rambling...
