You need to remove the entire door panel. The trouble is that that speakers are attached right to the panel, so not a great audio set up. They're 5-1/4" but aftermarket speakers do not have compatible pre-drilled holes. You can get adaptors (hit and miss) unless they're from the UK or you can carefully drill holes in your speakers like I did.

The front is 5-1/4". The back deck is an odd size, slightly bigger than our standard 6-1/2". It's not a perfect fit even with drilling so if you're particular about fit get a adapter at:

Audi Speaker adaptor kits

To me, it didn't seem worth the money, so I drilled and for the rears, I filled in the gaps (it doesn't sit perfectly with a bit of putty to create a good sound seal). The bass improved immensely - almost don't need a subwoofer.

Don't know your level of diy but here are som notes about drilling if you do decide to go this route.

For front speakers, mark holes by using the existing speakers as the template and align them face to face. And use a good metal bit (titanium goes through nicely) but start with a small bit to create a pilot hole. From that drilling the larger holes is easier.

For rear speakers, use the new speakers and mark where the holes to be drilled from the bottom of the shelf (from inside the trunk). The rear window prevents adequate drilling space.

Let me know how it goes.
