Hmph. 5 posts. And a 2009 S5.

Well, hmmm. Here I was going to post a nice, detailed walk-through with photos of the Valentine One installation I did in my 2009 S5, but since I'm still a newbie here I'm not allowed. I need 5 posts before I can include URLs. I recognize the need for that, to deter spamming. But it's inconvenient for me. And really, that's what matters here. ;)

So, yeah, I won't make this an entirely useless post. I can tell an abridged story about ordering my S5. In December 2007. And waiting. And waiting. Finally, back in December 2008, I got a call saying that they had finally received another allocation from the factory and my order was next up. I had to confirm all the details (I added on Audi Drive Select) and in the order went.

Then on Friday, March 20th I got *the* call. My car had arrived at the dealership, although not ready for delivery. It was still covered in packing material and needed to be detailed. Cut to Monday afternoon, after the single longest day of work I've ever suffered through. I was like a kid on Christmas Eve. I got the run-down on all the techno-gadgetry, and my wife followed me home in her car (2008 A4 Avant, Dolphin Grey Pearl).

Sixteen months from order to delivery. There were times when I thought it was never going to happen. And truthfully, 16 months later, there's no way I would go in now and order this car. The world is a very different place now. But, I'm glad I went ahead with it. This machine is pure pleasure to drive.

So, yeah, I'd love to post with photos, etc about transferring my V1 from my old car (2002 A4 1.8T quattro 5-spd) to the S5, but I need to think of some interesting things to talk about first. :-P

Anyway, I'll be back with more soon...

Actually, I neglected to say anything about the day I actually ordered the car... that ended up being a pretty crazy day unto itself.

I had just had the car (my A4) in for service and my wife drove me over to the dealership to pick it up. On our way out of Service headed back to our cars I said, "Hey, there was an R8 in the showroom last week when I dropped the car off. Let's go see if it's still there." It wasn't, but the disappointment was brief. Parked outside the showroom door was ... "What is that? What. Is. That?!" I'd never seen this car before. It was a 2-door, but it wasn't a TT. It was wider... bigger... distinctly more aggressive. After drooling over the curves as we walked up I finally sought out the model badge on the back. It was an S5. This was December 1st 2007, and I had never heard of an S5 before, much less seen one.

I got to talking with a salesman named Charles. (Awesome guy.) Before long, I'm sitting in the driver's Recaro seat, taking instruction on how to ignite the 4.2L V8. I instantly fell in love with that rumble. It's not a loud, obnoxious V8. It's sound is an automotive baritone choir.

I was hooked from the first blip of the throttle. Then we took it out of the parking lot for a spin. That only sealed my fate.

At the same time as all this was going on, my wife was "not opposed" to the idea of replacing her Ford Focus. Read: really wanted to get rid of it. It turns out that nearing the end of the B7 model's lifetime they had an A4 Special Edition package. It's essentially about half of the S-Line package, and it was on sale to bolster sales of the B7 in the months just before the B8 came out.

She got it into her head that if I was getting a new Audi she was too. Fine, I thought, knowing that she would be footing the bill herself. So while I placed an order for a Meteor Grey 2008 S5 (which would later become a 2009), she bargained with Charles and placed an order for a 2008 A4 Avant 2.0T S-Line 5-spd manual in Dolphin Grey Pearl (she got him to upgrade the rest of the S-Line package.)

Later that evening the two of us were reeling, as a we tried to digest what we'd done. "Did we really just order two new Audis today?" "Umm. Yes."

No regrets though. She loves her car, and is happy to be out of her Focus. And although I've only recently gotten my new car I loved it from the drive home.

So, anyone want to buy a 2002 A4 1.8T quattro 5-spd manual in Light Silver Metallic with Sport and Premium packages? :-D

LOL...I like the story, Tuco. Glad to hear both of you are enjoying your Audis. How'd the V1 working out? How many time did it save your bacon?

Hey Leo,

Honestly, here in Vancouver / the Lower Mainland, it's not really necessary. I mean, maybe half a dozen times in the last 5 years. But probably also that many times on road trips outside the Lower Mainland. I've had it for ... about 7 years now, and it has certainly paid for itself a couple times. But that doesn't mean I've never had a ticket. For laser it's mostly just notification that you should pull over now. ;)

Nice story LOL wish I could to that....but the economy sucks right now!!! And I agree about the V1 and the Laser it pretty much is just a warning hey you got caught pull over. Last time i was doing 117km/h in an 80km/h and pulled over and waited for the cops, because I knew and so did they. The cop came to my car and was like "well thats a first, the driver pulls over before I even had a chance to throw my car into drive" I got off with a lighter fine for doing that but still it was just a warning. It is good here in Calgary for the speed on green camera warnings. I am planing on getting an RS4 when the economy picks up and I have some hook ups back home in Europe on a Laser Interceptor, best one out there!!! Let me know if anyone wants one. They cost a lot but are totally worth it!!!

Congrats on the new car Tuco! I'm sure you'll love it.
And, now it seems you have 3 more posts than you need, so let the photos begin...
