2004 s4

I am looking at upgrading from a 2004 A4 to a 2004 S4.

I am hearing that the 2004 S4's burn or use oil.

Is this something that is common and is it fixable?

Thank you

S4 from the US

Does anyone know what changes are required to say a 2004 to 2006 S4 that is purchased from the US to come into Canada.

If so what are the costs?

Thank you

I wouldn't do it if I were you... You should try and find one here - you might save 4-5k at most on the import but really, is it worth all the trouble? Also have you seen the car? o you know what condition its in?

I have imported a few cars, and it isn't as bad as it seems and people make it out to be. There are a lot of savings to be had, and for 4-5k in savings I would do it any day, its a no brainer. Make sure you do your research and homework on the car, as for the import modifications, currently it is only the DRL's that need to be programmed in. For more details go to Registrar of Imported Vehicles

Re: 2004 s4

back to the first question, yes that year had problems with oil burning. I did the same, traded a a4 avant for a 04 s4 avant, the best part of my upgrade was the fact that my engine was swapped with a 07 b7 4.2, which doesn't seem to have the oil problem. There is a certain serial number of engine in the 04 world where some mods were done by the factory to fix a few problems, google a bit and you'll find it... i'll see if i can pull something up for you.

What is the specific issue regarding 2004 S4 engine burning oil? I have not heard of this for the 2004 S4 4.2L. A good friend has one at 180K+ KMs and it does not burn any oil.

It seems that some B6 S4s use oil while others do not. My question would be does the one you are considering use oil?

bint2k - How is your 4.2L doing for oil consumption?
Interesting links if you read everything as more owners report no problems with oil consumption, including at least one hard driving Autobahner. There are thousands of 4.2L engines out there and a small group are reporting the issue. Wonder how their specific cars was treated as several with the issue indicate they drive it hard and bought it used? Do you have the specific engine serial number range that is suggested to have this specific issue?

After inspecting for and / or repairing any obvious oil leaks in the system, a leak down test of any engine including Audi 4.2L's will verify if there is an existing issue that contributes to burning oil. If burning oil is a concern, perhaps Ban should consider paying a qualified tech to perform a leak down test as part of the inspection process on any used car before deciding to purchase.

I have no issues with oil leaking or abnormal usage. I have not had to top off the oil between changes. I would consider myself an occasional spirited driver. Love my car and love the V8 in it.
