Default 2001 s4 exhaust?

hey guys, just wondering if anyone has some input on an affordable full or catback system, preferably something with a good sound while also giving a bit of power for a 2001 s4? thanks

Define good sound and bit of power. Best power gain you're gonna get per dollar is re-mapping the ecu (chip).

Biggest gain you'll see in the exhaust is gutted DP's (piggie pipes). After that, larger diam after the downpipes.

If you can weld, that'll be the cheapest way. Did my full exhaust, dual 2.5" for under $500.

By good sound I am refering to something with a bit more bark but not anything

annoyingly loud and not raspy I still want a clean exhaust note. As far as gutting

the downpipes how much work is invloved in doing this? I am new to the s4 as of

september and it is a daily driven car and it cant be off the road for more than a

weekend as it is my only car. And I am looking into the chip hopefully this

weekend anyone had any issues after chipping?

Congrats on the new S4
When I got mine the first thing I looked at was the exhaust. I ended up going with a Borla Catback. When it was first installed it had a nice growl but it wasn't where I wanted it to be. So the next day I went back to my shop and had them remove the mid muffler so now theres only one and my God does it sound awesome. They ended up ripping out the mid muffler and replacing it with a 3'' straight pipe. Its not obnoxioiusly loud but it growls and has a nice burble when shifting. Highly recommend it.
Cost me $1300 installed with the mod.
Good luck shopping
Also look at AWE Twin 1 its extremely expensive but heard good things

Awe twin 1, Miltek. Both gonna cost you $$. Neuspeed is quite sedate as well although I wasn't crazy about how it fit. ASP has an awesome kit..again $$$.

Gutted DP's will take you a full day depepnding on your level of skill. You'll also need to relocate the O2 sensors or you'll get a CEL.

Almost all S4 I've heard get a little raspy with a full exhaust done. Conservative catbacks don't, but they all sound too sedate for my taste.

I found 2 3L a4 exhausts for 50 each, i'm probrably gonna get them just for the pipes. Correct me if i'm wrong, stock s4 runs 2.25" the 3L is running 2.5"
so 1 from each DP, now i just need to figure out how to run my Dual on the other side without getting rid of my spare :-s

Spare.....or Dual side exhaust.....hummmmm

hahha I got caa, forget the spare!, or maybe i'll leave a tiny doughnut!

Personally, I think you'd be better off getting virgin stainless pipe and working with that. Buy the j-bends and cut them as you need. You only need 2 j bends and about three 4 foot sections of stainless to go full dual. I just think it'd be easier than bastardizing an existing system from another car.

Secondly, I thought about the dual setup. Aside from just adding the weight of another muffler, it's gonna be very complicated to run and doesn't end up being a very "balanced" setup. You can't get rid of the spare tire well unless you relocate (with reservoir) the entire spare well because your evap system is hidden under that plastic plate ... booo!

So for dual, that leaves you with one each side in front of the rear wheels or running a pipe from one side to the other at the complete rear to put just a tip on the pass. side. which I find kinda pointless.

You could get really creative and start making channels in the existing sheet metal under the car...but you wanted to save on an exhaust so I doubt that's in the budget.

Find a used catback on audiworld and call it a day. Custom or home made isn't always cheaper. And it's rarely easier.

Good luck man.

i would get stainless, i just cant seem to find anywhere to get it. heck i thought for 50 i could just run 2. but like 2500 for full exhaust that i could weld myself, i'm not really willing to pay that. I already have gutted precats, and relocated O2 sensors.
i found some stainless steel pool ladders that's about 2 1/2 inches that would work but it's got holes in places i dont need. So i'm left to search again.

Any speed shop should be able to get you stainless from borla or vibrant. Short of that, any exhaust shop should sell you the material.

Found a shop that sells 2 1/2" Kit's with bends and such, Anyone done an H pipe setup? or combining the 2 exhausts then splitting back out to 2?

I've heard it's a great mod for the v8, but i can see it being benificial for the S4,
Lowers backpressure and balance's it more.
Nissan's have been doing it on 350's and 300Z twin turbo. Helps the turbo seals or something of the such.
For such a simple thing is it worth trying?
