I am new to the audi scene.....always had VW's.....i am just wondering what kind of oil and weight guys are running in their 3.0L.....obviously synthetic, but what kind? Also, are there different types of filters at all, or are they all pretty much the same....where can i buy these filters other than the dealer.....thanks

The bolts patern on your A4 are 5 x 112

 

There has been claims that synthetics are not needed on the 3.0, just high miles dino (this is from an oil guy over on AW). I myself have been running Motul 0W-40, 15,000km OCI, and have bought filters from ECS Tuning before (made by Mann, one of the OEM suppliers). Our V6's tend to need thicker oil to prevent oil consumption, by the way.

OCI=oil change interval.

Keep in mind though not all oils are have the same viscosity even when they've got the same rating. For instance, Mobil 1 0W-40 is known to be a thin oil, comparable to the German Castrol Syntec 0W-30, which is thicker than most 0W-30. The general opinion seems to be that a 40-weight oil is a good idea for our 3.0 (50-weight if summers are really hot).

you could probably go with a K & N filter if they make one, but i would not bother with an aftermarket filter for a daily driver...
