Sqeaking/Moving Driver's seat

99.5 A4 2.8 Quattro, 85k mi

The driver's side seat (non-sport) squeaks while going around corners,
sometimes during braking. I'll be damned if I can locate the source of
this. Anybody else have this problem and found a remedy?

The seat also moves a bit, just enough to make an expensive car feel
like junk. Any comments on this problem? What is involved in removing
the seat?
Dave

If its the same as mine, underneath the seat on the front there is a clip,
that is the point where the seat is moving, you can see the piece by getting
out of the car, push the seat right back and look in the footwell and the
underside of the front of the seat, to fix the moving, you can make a piece
of metal fit the "play" in the clip, sorta ram it in there. I used the
plastic piece from the lid of a BIC pen, the bit that clips the pen to your
pocket :)

As for the squeek, I have heard this is common, but it may be a spring
actually in the seat itself.

Not alot of help, but have a go

Re: Sqeaking/Moving Driver's seat

Hi,

I have had similar problems with my A6Q (1998).

1) If your seat is rocking side-to-side, then it will be the seat
runners (I am on my 4th set!). These seem to wear out real quick, and
the only proper solution is to replace them.

2) If the seat is rocking side-to-side and squeaking, you may
have a broken seat frame. I am on my 2nd seat frame. Again, the only
permanent solution is to replace the seat frame.

3) I have kept the worst 'til last. If your seat is rocking
forwards and backwards and sqeaking, get it checked out RIGHT NOW. I
discovered a weakness in the seat front stay. This is the part of the
seat where the forwards and backwards motion of the seat is
controlled. This stay (the bit where the seat adjustment is fixed to
the floor of the car) has a weakness. It is merely a bent piece of
steel which is, unfortunately, bent in the direction of stress. This
means that everytime you brake and accelerate you are bending this
piece of steel along the crease (a bit like bending a piece of
aluminium with your hands) Eventually it WILL SNAP. Mine snapped
when accelerating away from a set of traffic lights. The result was
that the seat slid all the way to the end of the seat runners and
tipped back. I was left lying on the back seat of the car with no
hands on the steering wheel and my feet on the dashboard still
travelling at 20mph. Fortunately I had the quick thinking to pull on
the handbrake! I can laugh now, but at the time is wasn't too funny.
This part is non-replaceable (new chassis required!?) but a specialist
engineering company managed to perform a specialist weld. It's
holding up OK at present.

The last one will probably only be the case if you drive the car like
a tit (and I DO drive it like a tit!), but why have a sports saloon to
drive it slowly around town?

I have found every weakness in the A6 at least a year before most
people, and long before Audi admit to anything, so if you have any
other questions, just let me know....
