The Bentley Book for my Audi100 1989 describes a procedure wherby you
can replace the struts without lifting the front of the car and without
using spring compressors.
The following tool is useful in removing the Strut retaining cap nut:

You must secure the Strut housing position with pieces of 2x4 so it
doesn't move after the strut has been removed.
Using this procedure you will not be able to change the Strut bearings.

I have not tried method myself. I changed the strusts on my 84 Audi
5000 removing the whole strut housing from the car.
