I'm not sure if this applies, but on my U.S. A4 (1997 2.8q) there was a
recall on the ignition switch for bad connections. When I had a tune
up the dealer fixed it free even though the car was well out of
warranty. Perhaps this applies to other Audi models from that year.

I'd send you a link to the website here that lists all recalls, but
the A3 isn't sold here!
