Nope, not necessary, but you may need to perform TBA.

never touched the battery when i installled mine. and it works great, no
limp mode. hardest part is getting the stock hose clamps off the valve, i
used a dremel to grind down the end with the tab bent over and the just
poped them open with a screwdriver. i researched tba and found you need a
vag tool to do the procedure. car is running great the way it is. if it
ain't broke dont fix it. "losely translated,....don't with mother
nature!" which movie guys????
