ECU Shoot-out?
Has there ever been any comparison between the chipped ECUs available for
the '86-88 5KCSQ? How do you know which "chipper" to go with? -- Antony Rodino |
Re: ECU Shoot-out?
Antony,
Search Audifans archives for "QLCC" or "Intended Acceleration" or "TAP Chip" The QLCC stands for Quattro List Chip Club - there was a chip created by some core members of Audifans and distributed widely - if you borrowed a copy of the chip you could burn your own, but I found that difficult and ended up buying a chip from Ben Swann. All that said, you might read the stuff on Boost Mods on www.sjmautotechnik.com and at http://www.homestead.com/Ben_Swann/myaudi.html There is something called a Resistor/Zener modification ("r/z mod")- that fools the computer into thinking that the boost pressure is always 1.4bar when the actual pressure is much higher in the intake manifold. This modification is super cheap (ie - less than 10 bucks at an electronics supply store) but there are problems associated with continuing to supply the engine with the fuel quantity for 1.4 bar boost (ie - running lean). The computer has an overboost protection built in and should the boost pressure be detected above this level then the computer removes the ground from the fuel pump relay (and your head hits the steering wheel). In oder to bypass this, some have hotwired the system by adding a static ground wire to the FPR - the computer can't shut off the pump (good thing), not even when the car crashes and engine dies (ooh, bad idea - think carbecue). The best advice that Ben or Scott will give you is that you should "get it stock" - ie, get it up to spec before modifications - otherwise you won't see the full benefit of the mods. The price for a QLCC modification (on Ben's site) is dirt cheap for a decent mod. Cheers! Steve Sears 1987 Audi 5kTQ - lining up all the ducks before QLCC goes in. 1980 Audi 5k - engine Chipping?....yeah, right. 1962 and '64 Auto Union DKW Junior deLuxes - mmmmm, yummy, chips!
