"Black box" recorders

Do Audi's have a "black box' recorder similar to those used in
airplanes? If so, when did they start and on what models? What is
recorded? How long is it kept?

Newer models list what they record in the owner's manual. The
dealership can tell you for older models.

I think mine said that it records a couple of seconds. Considering how
fast crashes happen, that's a long time.

Doesn't the computer that stores info to generate the average miles per
gallon and average speed have to store a series of speedometer readings?
Anyone know what the algorithm is or how many data points it keeps?
