Audi A4 (B7) 2.7 litre v6 diesel engine
 

Hi all

Interested in the above vehicle.

Can anyone tell me if this engine has 4 or 7 main bearings supporting the
crankshaft ?

Is that the deal breaker?

No idea but I would suggest 4 since it's a modern V6. 7 may give more
rigidity but increases engine size and internal friction.

I ask because the 3.2 FSI petrol is a 7 bearing v6, and I would rather have
the rigidity and smoothness of a 7 bearing crank.

Oh well in that case it may be a 7 bearing crank too. I think you'll have to
trawl deep to get that sort of information.

Maybe if you find out what the 3.0 TDI is that'll give the answer as the 2.7
is a short stroke version of that engine.

That is correct. But the 3.0 is quattro only (Torsen, I believe, rather than
the Haldex in our TT's).

I am getting fed up with BMW's now. Their cars do drive nicely, but the
dealers ( I tried 7 so far) have all been totally incompetent, lying rip-off
merchants, and the hostility from other road users is silly.
Did you know that the new Mercedes 3.0 v6 diesel engine has an aluminium 4
bearing crankshaft and produces 375 ft/lbs of torque?
Wow, how long will that last, I wonder.

Don't think the gearbox will make any difference to the number of main
bearings! Like I said, the 2.7 is a short stroke version of the 3.0 so will
have the same number of bearings.

I'm afraid that the attitude that you get as a BMW driver is heading towards
Audi drivers too. Thanks to the Q7 and RS4 Audi is now attracting the same
sort of bad press that BMW has had for years.

I don't think you'll find Audi dealers any different from BMW dealers.
They're all very nice when you're buying a car but that's where the good
service ends

I did not mean to infer that having Quattro or not would make any difference
to the number of journal bearings supporting the crankshaft, I simply meant
that the 3.0 was only available as a 'full time' four wheel drive, which I
do not require. But I did know that the 3.0 v6 diesel was the 'parent' of
the 2.7 v6 diesel.

Again, you're right, during our time as Audi owners, we have been to many
Audi centres whose mechanics are just as poor as those in BMW dealerships.
The cars we taken for work at franchises, whether they were BMWs, Audis,
Fords, Citroens, Vauxhalls, Peugeots or even our little Daewoo Matiz we use
for shopping in towns, the mechanics always seem to leave the cars damaged
or mis-treated, and the workmanship sloppy.
I tend to do as much of the work I can myself now as I have as much time as
I need.

I think that the universal 'bonus system' that allow mechanics get paid more
if the work is completed in less time than the manufacturer specifies for
it, is particularly unfair to the owner of the vehicle as it encourages the
mechanic to rush through jobs to earn more bonus / money.
