A6 4.2 option packages coded in VIN??

I am shopping for a used Audi A6 4.2. Is there a way to decode the
VIN and determine what option packages the car was equipped with at
build time.
(Premium, Sport, Cold weather, Hot weather....etc)
Thanks!
Dirk

Not from the VIN, but other codes present on the data sticker do detail
every option fitted to the vehicle. Unfortunately, I know of no
comprehensive reference for all of these codes.

Re: A6 4.2 option packages coded in VIN??

The VIN can only decode/explode particulars of any vehicle and is usually limited; Audi or otherwise and depending on the software tool to perform this task and it's ability to obtain that information from the manufacturer.

Mostly the VIN explosion will only include year, make, model, engine, transmission, drive. Not the extras... Cold weather, Technology, Convenience packages ect.

It becomes very frustrating for the shopper comparing vehicles of the same model/year when the advertising source (seller) does not provide that detailed information to compare with others on the same page to provide an APPLES to APPLES comparison with year, price, miles, colors ect...

One would think with all the technology provided in 2008, this would be more easily accessed. As my Audi's go online for me to write the ad, I try my best to dig out and display that info for my internet shoppers.

It's tough to work out if there are no decent pictures of the car on the add. A few pointers for the 2000 cars:

for the GPS look for a 3" dome on the trunk lid
Hot weather package look for a button on the dash next to the ESP switch. it operates the rear sunshade.
For the cold weather, look for heated seat buttons.
there was no actual sport package in 2000 just the 17" 8 spoke wheels as an option,
hope that helps

VIN often let you know what the car came with. One section will indicate if the car came with the sports package, or it came with another large package. It's the factories way of keeping track of how many cars with whichoptions left the factory, when they left, where they went, and when they weresold. But you'd need some sort of reference in order to decode the VIN, and I'mnot aware of any. Sport Compact Car magazine ran a segment, at least a year
ago, maybe more, but it was all about VIN decoding. You can try getting in
touch with them, to see if they can identify which issue it was, and send you a
back-order copy.

I have some Audi manufacturer VIN decoder pdf's for pre-owned vehicles in the last 5 years or so on my work computer I just came across today. Will post tomorrow however I'm not sure if that will decipher all option codes. Totally understand the frustration.
