A4 Not Starting after Clutch Replacement

Hi

I have a 97 A4 1.8TQ.... I recently took it for repair to a local Audi
specialist who was recommended to me by a few of my friends who own german
cars including Audi and BMWs etc...

Anyhow, when I took the car to him, it had only two problems:
1) Rear Passenger Bearing needed to be replaced and
2) Clutch was almost gone

He replaced the bearing and took the car for a test drive. When he
returned, he told me the bearing was ok, but the car was 'dead' and the
clutch was gone.

I figured teh clutch was almost gone anyway, so might as well let him fix
it.

Calls me back today, 2 days later to tell me that the clutch is in and car
is off the hoist, but the engine is not cranking for some reason.

My car doesn't have the immobilizer or a clutch switch (i.e. no need to
press clutch to start) etc....and I never had ANY problems with starting...

So anyway he told me to come over take the car back...I get there, and of
course, car is still not cranking....we checked the ground, power
connections etc etc....all fuses, as well.
Nada....

He hooked up the starter directly to the battery and car starts just fine.
So now he tells me it may be the ignition switch!!!

I have never ever ever had any problems with the ign and I doubt it would go
like that without any prior warning or symptoms...

I have a feeling its something between the ign and starter circuit thats
causing this...and I really dont feel like I should be wasting my time
searching for this info after paying him big $$$
but anyway...cant fight everyone, right! Besides, I need my car as my job
involves a lot of travel and I cant just bus it...

Can anyone help out here?? What could be causing this?

When you turn the ignition on do you get an amber light on the dashboard
with a picture of a key? it should flash up once then go off, sounds like
your imobil is f**ked, you may need to recode the keys, someone will help
you out on how to do it.

Just clutching at straws

Ron
